ISLAMABAD: Hours after Anwar Mansoor Khan resigned from his post, the PTI-led government has decided to appoint renowned lawyer Khalid Javed Khan as Attorney General for Pakistan, The Express Tribune has learnt on Thursday.
A senior government official has confirmed to The Express Tribune that Prime Minister Imran Khan approved Khalid’s nomination and a notification in this regard is expected to be issued tomorrow.
Anwar departure came in the wake of Pakistan Bar Council’s demand that he stepped down over his contemptuous comments regarding a full-court bench hearing Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s case against the presidential reference.
In a letter addressed to President Dr Arif Alvi, Anwar had said he was a life-time member of the Karachi, Sindh and Supreme Court bar associations and wanted to “reaffirm faith in the highest principles of integrity and professional excellence that the Pakistan Bar Council has always stood for”.
The newly-appointed AGP professional career spans over two decades. He enrolled as advocate high court in 1991 and became an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2004. His father, Prof N D Khan, is a seasoned politician associated with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for a long time.
Khalid, a Karachi-based lawyer had served as legal adviser to AGP and, in this capacity, advised Benazir Bhutto on legal matters during her second tenure (1993-1996) as prime minister.
He obtained law degree from London University, BCL (bachelor of civil law) degree from Oxford University, LLM from Harvard University and completed his bar-at-law from Lincoln’s Inn.
Barrister Khalid had waged a battle against the Provisional Constitution Order by former president Pervez Musharraf and wrote several articles against the unconstitutional action.
