Abuja (AFP) - Nigeria's former highest-ranking airforce officer is being questioned as part of an investigation into the alleged diversion of funds intended to fight Boko Haram, a source close to the probe said on Thursday.

"Former chief of air staff Air Marshal Adesola Amosun has been with us since yesterday (Wednesday)," the official at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"He is being interrogated in connection with the arms deal scandal."

A statement from President Muhammadu Buhari's office on January 15 said the EFCC probe into alleged weapons procurement fraud had been widened to include 17 former or serving high-ranking officers.

They included the former chief of defence staff, Alex Badeh, whom Buhari replaced last year, it added.

The probe would look at "the roles of the officers and the... companies and their directors in fundamental breaches associated with the procurements" by former national security advisor Sambo Dasuki and the air force, the statement read.

Dasuki is facing a string of allegations over allegedly bogus arms deals to provide Nigeria's military with the weapons and equipment needed to fight the Islamist group in the country's northeast.

The material either never materialised, was over-priced or deficient, according to a panel looking into the procurement.

Prosecutors allege the money was channelled to the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to fund Goodluck Jonathan's re-election campaign last year.

Jonathan lost to Buhari, a no-nonsense anti-corruption campaigner and former military ruler, in the first democratic transition of power between political parties in Nigeria's history.

Buhari has embarked on a wide-ranging crackdown on endemic graft since taking office last year, leading to a slew of arrests and charges, particularly against senior PDP members and supporters.

Hi,

People are bragging about Gen Raheel Shareef world over---where the real hero is the retired general in nigeria----. Pres Gen Buharu retd has taken action aganist so many corrupt officials---put them behind bars and started investigations.

This similar thing needs to be done against the air chief of paf---who decided to go for the F16's that are under the threat of sanctions one more time.

This action has put the strength of the air force in jeopardy one more time and it is tantamount to high treason against the state.

The air force failed to asses the situation rightly when they were working with the french for the electronics and weapons for the JF 17---not realizing that that it was going to fail. The french cancellation of the order was obvious to many---but the air force chose to look the other way---.

This is the same thing happening right now----. Right at the time of deliveruf of the new F16's after 3 years---someone can put a hold on it just before delivery and we will be stuck one more time.

Is there any symmetric in above news and PAF?
Why are you linking them?

You can't do that, principally. To arrest you need evidence of corruption, kickbacks or malicious intent. A professional will forward his recommendations on the basis of its capability and suitability to do the job within allocated resources by the political government. It is not his job to assess political repercussions or future fall outs. Nor is it his job to predict future of diplomatic relations between two nations. It is the job of political government who is solely responsible for diplomacy. PAF has no say in foreign relations unlike Army.

A professional may be proven wrong over the time despite his honest effort. He has no crystal ball to predict the future. But you can not prosecute him for that.

Hi,

Nowadays---you don't need to prove it----the criminal has to tell how he got the wealth--.

The air marshall need to tell---why he opted for the sanction prone aircraft one more time when the relationship with the u s was going bad----.

The effort must have a tinge of larceny in it as well---it cannot all be honest----air force has been acting as idiots for the last many years----.

This F16 issue is the most recent---the JF17 electronics was the other major issue---.

All militaries that make procurements from other countries who are on fringe of sanctions confer with their crystal balls.

Just put a few of them in front of the anti aircraft gun---and just like magic---you will find out they indeed have a crystal ball.

.
There is need to deliver some Justice in the ranks of Military at High levels ............. related to kickbacks, corruption, negligence... etc etc
But I don't think you can drag some Air Chief in Military court just because He followed one aircraft instead of other one or showed irresponsible attitude for aircraft components contracts.............. the ''blame'' is not strong enough..............

.
If I'm not wrong there was also a scandal about F-16's procurement in late 1980's when PAF order 71 jets from LM and LM had paid almost $200mln to the PAF and other officials in Defense department for that order as kickbacks..

.
Indeed selective accountability, as being practiced since partition till right now, is more hazardous than anything.

You can ask the General about the source of his wealth. But you can not ask him on his recommendations of a particular aircraft, sanction prone or otherwise. This is not his domain. This is political government's domain. Deal is done by the government not the Air Force. Government, more precisely foreign minister has the foresight on foreign relations. If FM thinks sanctions are likely in future, Defence Minster should ask Air Chief to come up with second best option. Stop putting everything on Generals. Air Chief is neither signatory of defence deals nor he manages the funds for it. Defence minister, Finance minister and Foreign minister are the main players. Your critique should be directed at them.

.
In the PAF context, I do fail to see why the PAF would keep on insisting on Vipers, given the fact that they are sanction-prone. The PAF for some reason, maybe because of pressure from PA or GOP, has been biased towards the Viper, which is quite detrimental.

The point @MastanKhan has raised is very valid, what if, at the time of delivery, three years down the road, a schmuck puts an indefinite hold on them, then what? PAF / PA / GOP needs to cut their losses, and get out. Enough is enough, start looking at other options ASAP.

Best Regards

That's the point of concern who does actually understand the importance of a Strong Air force in Modern warfare .. PAF keep insisting for F-16's which was denied many times , even if they are released they comes with a bunch of condition and US inspections teams always on our A$$'s ..
Almost every one believe J-10B&C to be par with F-16's but PAF still did not make a decision .. if we have inked the deal of 36 J-10B's in Past , so by end of 2018 we might have around 70-80 J-10C's which contains our older J-10B upgraded to C version .. and our F-7PG fleet be retired by now...

other benefit can be that we can use the technology learn from J-10's used on JF-17 future blocks and make it equal to F-16's block 52's ... and by 2020 .. we can easily pack our Air force with around 70 F-16, 60-70 J-10C's , 150 JF-17's and mirages if they are still servicable .. .Imagine a fleet of around 300-320 Fighter jets , BVR Capable ..

but seems like PAF is so deep in corruption shit that , and they know no one in this country can touch them ...

I personally believe that whatever PAF decides on as it's top end fighter i.e. J-31 or J-20, what it needs to do now, is induct J-10C's and JH-7B's, ASAP. Quit wasting time.

PAF pilots already are well versed in PLAAF aircraft types, the FOC time won't be as long, as it would be if some other platform, were to be inducted.

.
your basically saying that billions of dollars are vanishing into thin air and are being transfered into offshore bank accounts? . if a group of 50 personal are involved, that means 20-40 million is going to each account, if this is the case those involved need to be hanged. and since they've been playing this game since the 90s there is obviously a large network involved. and if i'm honest the fascination of the F-16 does seem a little idiotic considering how badly the US has treated the PAF

.
Hi,

It is a moment of truth---how can we say that the JF17 with all the upgrades is very close to the BLK 52 and with blk3 aesa---etc---it would be superior to it----.

And then people say that the J10C is inferior to the BLK52---or is not a competent aircraft---.

Can one understand the stupidity and hypocrisy---and both have chinese equipment!!!

Well remember the F-16 procured in 2000s were purchaced through US Funds. Given the option for US warplanes and already operating F-16 iy makes sense to go for them as only other options are US Warplanes not operated by PAF. That being said any future procurements make with Pakistans own money would be looked at with more scrutiny... But we arent gonna give you money to go buy chinese, russian and even European fighters when our country needed the jobs.
