This Eid expect stricter curbs, zero connectivity, no congregations

Srinagar, Sept 10: The authorities in Kashmir are mulling to take tougher measures to curb public rallies and clashes in the Valley especially in south of Kashmir during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha days.
The measures include deployment of Army (which has already begun in south Kashmir on Saturday), and, as per sources, may also include snapping of whatever communication has been left unsnapped including the 20,000 odd broadband internet connections, the postpaid mobile phone connections, and the incoming call facility on prepaid numbers.
The section 144, which authorities claimed to have removed from some parts in the valley on September 07, will also be implemented in full force on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha. The Section restricts assembly of more than four people thus raising question on whether or not the authorities will allow congregational Eid prayers on the day.
Former Chief Minister and main Opposition leader Omar Abdullah criticized the government for imposing section on the eve of Eid. “Why is the Centre imposing 144? This should be a local decision & in any case how can it be imposed during Eid Namaz,” Omar tweeted.
The extraordinary measures come in the backdrop of a Hurriyat’s UNO chalo call on the first day of Eid.
A top police source said the idea is to let people offer their Eid prayers at local mohalla mosques and not allow them access to bigger Eidgahs or mosques that could lead to large congregations and give a handle to the “resistance groups to launch agitation afresh on a bigger scale”.
He said the administration is not bothered that the clampdown during Eid in Kashmir could give others a handle to drumbeat, but the whole idea is to control the protests and avoid any further killings.
According to official sources, Army has also been asked to strictly deal with protesters and not show any signs of leniency in all the four districts of south Kashmir - Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam - which continues to remain tense since July 8. However, the army has been directed to avoid using firearms as far as possible.
The south Kashmir which has become the epicenter of this prevailing uprising witnesses street protests, demonstrations, and pro-freedom rallies almost every day. In many such gatherings, militants too have been spotted flashing weapons.
The tense situation across the valley has forced the top government officials including Chief Secretary and DG Police to shun the norm of video-conferencing and travel to every district in a chopper and brief the local administration about the measures to be taken during the upcoming Eid days.
