The Earth's peak oil production has passed. From now on, oil is only going to get scarcer and more expensive, and will soon run out.
So why we are spending HUGE amounts of our budget on the military in order to secure the dwindling oilfields in the Middle East, rather than develop alternatives?
I cant get my head round it at all. Surely any Western government can see the they are totally reliant on oil, a resource that will not last another 100 years and is only going to get more and more expensive. Surely the first country to develop itself into an oil-free nation would be at a massive financial advantage to the rest straight away and in the long term? It would be in the governments best interest to remove this millstone of oil costs from its neck and reap the rewards of a new fuel source. Its now the year 2010, and we seriously cant think of anything better than burning a dirty fossil fuel in an engine to propel our vehicles?
Even the idea that the governments are bought off by oil companies doesnt make sense. Somewhere down the line oil companies are going to be totally redundant as there simply wont be any oil. Doesnt it make sense for them at some point to branch into other energy sources?
From a political, economic, environmental, social and technological viewpoint, the refusal of the Western world to ignore alternative energy development and focus on fighting for dwindling oil supplies in the middle east MAKES NO SENSE
