ISLAMABAD: A retired senior bureaucrat says he has seen samples of Pakistan’s new currency notes of Rs5000, Rs100 and Rs20 in 2006 with the then president Pervez Musharraf’s photographs, which were later not approved for printing and circulation.
“It so happened that I and some topmost officials of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (PSPC) were going to Karachi from Islamabad in the same flight some time in 2006. During our journey, the officials showed me the designs of the new currency notes with Pervez Musharraf’s pictures,” former Election Commission secretary Kanwar Dilshad told The News.
He said the top guns told him that they had just come back after meeting the president where they discussed the new designs of the currency notes of Rs5000, Rs100 and Rs20 with Musharraf’s pictures. “Musharraf rejected the samples and asked us to carry on with the pictures of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.”
Dilshad believed that it was not the then prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali who had turned down the samples with Musharraf’s photographs. “It is possible that Jamali might have come to know about the matter later.”
He said the officials concerned had a number of designs of new currency notes with them that they showed to the then dictator for approval of one or more of them. They had got the samples from different people, engaged for the purpose.
In a recent interview to Geo Television, Jamali claimed that Musharraf was keen to have his photograph on the currency notes to replace Jinnah’s pictures. He said he wasn’t aware as to who advised Musharraf that currency notes carry his photograph. He has now got the answer in Dilshad’s claim.
Reacting to Jamali’s assertion, Musharraf recently boasted that the former prime minister has no gall to confront him on the issue. Dilshad, who remained the ECP secretary for years before his retirement after nearly 40 years of service, said the top bureaucrats had also made a similar proposal to Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto arguing that he deserved this honour as he has laid the foundation of a new Pakistan. But Bhutto too had dismissed the strong persuasion and suggestion, he recalled.
He said precisely a similar proposal was given to Ayub Khan after he had won the presidential election against Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. “Ayub Khan was also not impressed with the idea.” Dilshad said he did not know whether a similar proposal was also being made to President Asif Ali Zardari because sycophants had always been galore in every era, who painted the ruler of the day as a rare species Pakistan has never seen before and the wonders that he is showing are unprecedented.

. .
By this story it seems most probably, someone in the establishment tried to raise his points infront of the President and gone with the idea without Mushy uncle knowing about it, but when it came infront of Uncle Mushy, he shot down the idea, since he was not that much drunk while seating on the seat of power.
