Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has showcased a model of a new submarine for the Republic of China Navy (RoCN). The Indigenous Defense Submarine was unveiled during the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE 2017).

The IDS is the first priority of indigenous naval shipbuilding for the Republic of China Navy. It will integrate the resources from industry, government, and academia to develop domestic submarine design and construction capabilities, improve craftsmanship, pro¬mote quality of domestic equipment, and build up critical technologies. The contract design is conducted from 2016 to 2020. The follow works will be started when the design is finished.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) on 21 March signed an agreement with the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) and naval shipbuilder CSBC Corporation, Taiwan, for the design and construction of an indigenous submarine fleet.

The contract was signed at Zuoying Naval Base in Kaohsiung during an event attended by Taiwanese defence minister Feng Shih-kuan and president Tsai Ing-wen.

The model in the photo above is simply the Hai Lung class (Dutch Swordfish class).

As compared to the original Zwaardvis

The hull design is based on the US Barbel

It has more apparent similarity to German Type 214/216 and French Scorpene.

This looks more like SkipJack Class Sub of Cold War Era
The Barbel-class submarines were the last diesel-electric propelled attack submarines built by the United States Navy, incorporated numerous, radical engineering improvements over previous classes. They were the first production warships built with the teardrop-shape hull first tested on the experimental USS Albacore (AGSS-569), and the first to combine the control room, attack center, and conning tower in the same space in the hull.

Built: 1956 – 1959
In commission: 1959 – 1990

The Skipjacks' design was also based on the USS Albacore's high-speed hull design. This class introduced the teardrop hull and the S5W uclear reactor to U.S. nuclear submarines. The hull and innovative internal arrangement were similar to the diesel-powered Barbel class that were built concurrently. The Skipjack, however, was an SSN.

Built: 1956–1961
In commission: 1959–1990

Skipjack was authorized in the FY 1956. She entered service only three months after Barbel, having been laid down only 11 days later.

The 1972 Zwaardvis-class submarine of the Netherlands = the 1987 Hai Lung-class submarine of the Republic of China (built and sold by the Netherlands) = developments of the Barbel class design. Likewise 1992 Dutch Walrus class. The 1968 Japanese Uzushio class and its successors (Yūshio, Harushio, Oyashio and Sōryū classes) were also influenced by the Barbel class.

Barbel class initially had bow mounted diving planes. Later converted to sail mounted diving plains, like Skipjack's.
