KARACHI: The crackdown on the sugar-hoarders is being carried out across the country, Geo News reported Saturday.
The government has arrested several people involved in creating an artificial crisis of sugar and recovered lakhs of hoarded sugar in various cities.
At least 2000 sugar bags were recovered in Hafizabad, 30,000 in Sargodha, 5530 bags were taken in custody in Bukhar; 1500 bags in Khushab, 845 in Pindi Bhatian, 12500 in Pakpattan, 18,000 in Gujrat, 430 in Mianwali, 2,427 in Sheikhupura, 15,000 in Chichawatni, 10,586 in Joharabad; while, 600,000 bags were captured in Bahawalnagar.
In raids in Jalapur Bhatian, 995 bags, 2,107 in Kamalia and 8,000 bags were taken in custody; also, 15 shops were sealed and their owners have been arrested.
Similarly, 800,000 sacks of sugar were taken in custody in Toba Tek Singh, 15,000 from Lahore and over 6000 sacks were captured in Ghaziabad.
According to sources, there are over 800,000 sugar sacks present at 42 sugar mills of Punjab; these will be brought to market in the holy month of Ramazan.
Meantime, Punjab CM ordered all the dealers to announce the quantity of their stocks and sell them in the market.
While, DCO Karachi Javed Hanif said police have taken in custody 36,000 sugar bags and over dozen people have been nabbed for hoarding sugar.
