Arabian World Construction Summit 2012: Stone sector can earn $500m if TDAP tries
* Leading stone, marble, engineering people will meet to explore markets in Middle East and North Africa

KARACHI: Pakistan marble and stone sector could fetch more than $500 million export orders of semi and finished marble products besides blocks supplies to UAE and other Arab states.
If Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) takes serious note of the international event and facilitates the real stakeholders by sending business delegations to the event, it will provide huge financial benefits to the country, Chairman BMG All Pakistan Marble Mining Processing Industry and Exporters Association (APMMPIEA) Sanaullah Khan said on Tuesday.
The Commerce Ministry should ask TDAP to include marble sector in its ambit in order to enhance the marble and stone exports, besides to earn more foreign exchange, he added.
Arabian World Construction Summit 2012 is going to be held from May 20-23 in Abu Dhabi UAE.
Leading stone, marble and engineering people besides construction leaders from the world will meet to explore the new and emerging markets in the Middle East and North Africa, Khan added.
The participants will discuss business related matters besides exclusive insight into macro-economic and political influences, investor sentiment, risk and project data, he informed.
The regions premier construction and infrastructure event will host over 300 senior professionals, including leading project clients, contractors, consultants and suppliers. The projects included Qatars $600 billion infrastructure spend in preparation for 2022 Olympics, Saudi Arabia, the regions largest construction market of $365 billion of project spending up to 2015 across the full spectrum of infrastructure development.
There is a dire need to explore construction sectors in Iraq and Arab States as billions of dollars construction projects with more than $9,000 million marble products are needed, The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Iraqs gross domestic product to expand 12.6 percent in 2012. Iraq capital spending on infrastructure will increase by one-third including housing and utilities.
The countrys marble and natural stone exports quantum touched above $76 million in 2011, Khan maintained.
He said the quantum of marble exports has touched more than $100 million in 2011 as compared to $60 million dollars during the same period last year.
According to World Bank studies Balochistan has more than half of the national prospective geology for minerals, yet it contributes just over one-fifth to national mining GDP and leads only in the production of coals.
UAE still holds the most projects with the highest values, including rail and aviation besides Kuwait-forthcoming port, airport and real estate projects are of prime projects.
North Africa dedicated sessions on opportunities in Egypt and Libya besides streamed case study presentations: Pick your project including King Abdullah Financial District, Etihad Rail and Kuwait airport expansion are among the mega projects.
The trade commissioners in Pakistan missions will be activated in due course of time for getting maximum benefits from the event, said a senior official of TDAP.
Around 200 marble products manufacturing units in the largest marble industrial cluster of the country in Karachi are running at half their capacity, thus incurring a production loss of over Rs 27 million a day.
Around 200 quarries remained closed for more than two years in the Balochistan province owing to feud among different clans.
Balochistan Mineral Department was also facing a net loss of Rs 600,000 per day in the form of not getting quarry lease fee.
The mining and quarry sector contributes nearly 0.6 percent to Pakistans Gross Domestic Products (GDP) with an estimated value addition of more than Rs 16.5 billion.
