Coffee With kababs
Nightlife was the first casualty of the decades of turbulence in Kashmir but with improvement in the security situation, residents and tourists can be seen till quite late along the banks of the Dal Lake and other areas like Lal Chowk, Residency Road and Malauna Azad Road.
A decade ago, such a thing was unthinkable. Even now, the city does not have options like bars and pubs since religious obligations prohibit Muslims in the Valley from drinking. However, coffee shop chains that have set up shop here are attracting a huge clientele. Iqbal Tramboo, a coffee shop owner, says that the cafe culture has injected new life in Kashmir's capital and other cities. He said that more than 500 people visit his cafe every day. That's why he and others like him have decided to stay open till midnight.
Students and office-workers are regulars at these cafes, which have become good places to unwind. Another favourite night time activity for many is gorging on kababs. The preferred area for this is Khayyam Chowk in downtown Srinagar, known for its mutton tikkas. Shop lights are on till much of the city has gone to sleep and there is a constant stream of excited revelers.
A stroll along the Dal Lake in the night is an experience to savour. A midnight snack to die for: Special Tujjas (mutton tikkas) that can be found only in Kashmir!
Doesn't seem one bit like Kashmir is made out to be - terrorism, guns, grenades, human rights violations and so on. It's just like any other city! Cool and happening! Yep, things have changed a lot in Kashmir, thanks to gen next!
Cheers!
