Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa rejects calls to demilitarize former northern war zone

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka’s president rejected international calls to remove military camps in the former northern war zone, as the island nation marked the third anniversary of the end of its civil war

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said his government was not prepared to undermine national security by removing camps in the north because remnants of the separatist Tamil Tigers remain active.

“Some are shouting to remove the camps in the north,” Rajapaksa said Saturday at a ceremony marking the anniversary of the war’s end. “It is no secret that the LTTE leaders who conscripted child soldiers, committed war crimes are freely operating in foreign countries.” LTTE is the acronym for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

He added that although the war is over, these separatist groups “still operate and carry the same demands.”

Therefore, it is not possible to “remove camps in the north and to reduce our attention on national security,” he said in a speech televised nationally.

His comments came as Foreign Minister G. L. Peiris was in the U.S. on an official visit.

In a meeting with Peiris on Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton “stressed the importance, as she always does, of demilitarizing the north” of Sri Lanka, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Other countries and international human rights groups have also urged Sri Lanka to demilitarize the north.

Sri Lanka showed off its military hardware during a victory parade Saturday, amid growing criticism over alleged rights abuses in the final phase of the quarter-century civil war.

The conflict that killed more than 80,000 people ended in May 2009, when government forces crushed the rebels who had fought for a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils, claiming decades of discrimination by the Sinhalese majority.

Artillery, tanks and rocket launchers were featured in the parade down Colombo’s main thoroughfare, Galle Face, facing the Indian Ocean. Thousands of troops, including disabled soldiers in wheelchairs, joined in.

Warplanes and helicopters flew over Galle Face while navy gunships sailed along the coast.

Ties with Washington have been strained by U.S. sponsorship of a resolution passed by the U.N. Human Rights Council in March to press Sri Lanka to conduct an independent probe into civilian deaths in the final months of the war.

Human rights groups have accused Sri Lanka of foot-dragging and evasion on the issue.

With several Indian politicians openly advocating separatism in Sri Lanka, it's a good move to keep the army in the north of the country.

Let India start by demilitarizing Kashmir, the North Eastern states, its border with Pakistan and Bangladesh before preaching to others. Lead by example and others will follow.

Military deployment of Sri Lankan forces merely based on opinions of some Indian politicians.? wow!

India has no troops on Bangladesh border.

Such statements by Indian politicians are not doing anything favourable to create demilitarization, especially since India has armed, trained and funded terrorist group like the LTTE in the past and the state of Tamil Nadu has served as a source of weapons.

And then India should reign in the BSF then. Lead by example as the "largest democracy in the world" and demilitarise itself, and then smaller countries will follow.

And the defeat of LTTE was also done with the blessings of central govt in india...
Am tired of these india SL threads... when particularly killlers of 40000 tamilians are roaming freely inside sl country...
Funny to find out that not even 1 have been prosecuted till now

why we should move camps from North? Army camps are located in many areas. I do have army camp in the middle of city, no problem at all!

It's OUR country, it's OUR elected government, it's OUR army and it's OUR decisions!

In the past yes! in the present you have no proof for that.

BSF is a paramilitary. BSF is called Border Security Force.

Once bitten, twice shy.

Doesn't matter. They are people with guns who shoot to kill. And they have killed many a Bangladeshi.

Let India first Demilitarize before preaching to others.

Can you blame Sonia Gandhi for hating the LTTE? I can't.

And are more than welcome to join Vaiko, Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha and scream and shout with placards. Your Tamil leaders have as much blood on their hands as anyone else.

Once bitten, twice shy.

OK!

Doesn't matter. They are people with guns who shoot to kill. And they have killed many a Bangladeshi.

International borders are no picnic spot, they"ve killed more Indians then Bangladeshis.

Let India first Demilitarize before preaching to others.

It just turns out, i'm unable to find any news source reporting India Govt or MEA asking GSL for demilitarization.

 If we really want to separate sri lanka, Do you think placing the mighty sri lankan army in the north would stop it?
Dont be a fool. India is not interested in separating lanka. It's just some m***er f****ing politicians having mental masturbation. But you are free to believe what ever you want. Yeah...go ahead and start believing that India wants to separate the moon and quote me as a source.

Dont talk about things you have no idea about kid. Mind you...If we want we can even de-militarize northern srilanka as well. :smokin:

I think he meant from a perspective of preventing arms smuggling.

That attitude gets us into trouble.

OK!

Similarly, there has been a bloody, devastating war in Sri Lanka for more than 30 years with thousands upon thousands of deaths. It has been only 3 years since the end of that war and (1) Tamil politicians in India continue to openly support separatism in Sri Lanka and the LTTE and (2) the Tamil diaspora have not stopped their anti-Sri Lankan activities.

So it is not the time to demilitarize the north of Sri Lanka in my opinion.

It just turns out, i'm unable to find any news source reporting India Govt or MEA asking GSL for demilitarization.

That's what Sushma Swaraj wanted if I am not mistaken.

Its their country, they should decide where they place their army.
That said, large scale human right violation will not be tolerated for long by international community. You need a closure to the tamil conflict and the arrogance of majority is not helping.

But Tamil Nadu has certainly played a VERY significant role in supporting militancy in Sri Lanka. This is the place were (1) the Tamil Tigers sought refuge, where (2) arms, guns and ammunition were smuggled to Sri Lanka and where, currently there is open support for separatism in Sri Lanka by its leaders. The north of Sri Lanka, also, has been the hotbed of separatism in the island.

Dont talk about things you have no idea about kid. Mind you...If we want we can even de-militarize northern srilanka as well. :smokin:

A country that cannot even control its own territory trying to control another's? Really? OK whatever you say.

Like I said if India wants demilitarization in Sri Lanka let it start by demilitarizing Kashmir. What's fair is fair.

@Indian members, explain why no need to have ARMY camps in Northern Sri Lanka? XD
