Sri Lanka - Pakistan Business Council extends support to Flood Victims

Pakistan has been severely affected by unprecedented floods caused by heavy rains and over 15 million people have been affected in various ways.

It has destroyed the infrastructure system, washed away communication lines, caused extensive damage to the crops and left millions of people homeless. Initial estimates put recovery cost at over US $ 460 million, which is now believed to be US $ 2 billion.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) based at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat in Pakistan is coordinating the rescue and relief operations and had launched an appeal for international assistance to meet the challenge of reconstruction.

In keeping with its Corporate Social Responsibility, the Sri Lanka – Pakistan Business Council (SLPBC) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with the support of its generous members, contributed relief items and cash donations towards victims of flood affected areas in Pakistan.

The handing over of these contributions took place on October 6th of 2010 at the High Commission of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Colombo.

Whilst thanking its members for their kind support towards this worthy cause as good corporate citizens, the SLPBC hopes that people in affected areas of Pakistan will be able to recover quickly from psychological and physical damages caused by this natural calamity.
