Sri Lanka gems to set record in China

The Sri Lanka National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) with the Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing and in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association will be organizing the Sri Lanka Pavilion at the Shanghai Jewellery 2010 that will be held from April 9-12 setting a new record for the number of Sri Lanka exhibitors in China for the gem sector.

Thirty Sri Lankan exhibitors will be showcasing the best of Sri Lanka gems at this four day event considered as the premium international trade event dedicated to gems, fashion jewellery and accessories industry in Eastern China.

Exhibitors from the fields of diamond, pearl, platinum, gold, silver, antique jewellery, gemstones - Ruby, Sapphire, Opal, Emerald, Crystal, equipment and accessories of jewellery making will be participating at this year's edition from China, Hong Kong, Thaiwan, Korea, Thailand, Switzerland apart from a record number of exhibitors from Sri Lanka.

The fair will provide the perfect opportunity for gem and jewellery suppliers and buyers from all around the world to converge and conduct business in Eastern China. Sri Lanka reaped many positive results at the 2009 edition of the fair concluded on a positive note with over 15 exhibitors from Sri Lanka.

Last year according to organizers' statistics, visitors from Shanghai (59.29 percent), visitors from Eastern China (18.77 percent), other areas of China (19.01 percent), overseas visitors (2.93 percent, from 39 countries and regions) attended the fair.

The results of last year encouraged the Sri Lanka Embassy to expand the Sri Lanka participation to a record number this year with the able support of the NGJA.

The choice of Shanghai as the venue for the show reflects not only its reputation as a cosmopolitan city and a fashion trendsetter but also its strategic proximity to major population centres. Shanghai, mainland China's most fashionable and exciting city, is a fitting venue for the international gem and jewellery trade.

The Commercial Section of the Sri Lanka Embassy has joined the Gem and Jewellery Trade Association of China to make this fair the Sri Lanka gateway to expanding the sales network and accessing the right buyers, the right retailers and the right outlets for Sri Lankan precious stones.

By 2020, the annual total sales of China's jewellery industry are expected to reach 300 billion yuan, with exports exceeding $12 billion.

By then, China will become one of the most competitive jewellery manufacturing and trading centres in the world and the largest global jewellery consumption market in recent years. China's economy has been growing at a high speed.

The improvement of per capita consumption levels brings with it the production and consumption of luxuries including gems and jewellery which are becoming the third consumption hotspot after property and automobiles.

With the demand for gems and jewellery is rapidly mounting with the rising income of the Chinese population and Sri Lanka is receiving the margin of preference under Asia Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA) for this sector. Sri Lanka is set to achieve new heights with the far-sighted approach of the Embassy and NGJA.
