Chinese and Far Eastern businesses are invited to Sri Lanka’s mega International exhibition and business forum “EXPO2012” to be held in Colombo next year. They are also encouraged to capitalise on the emerging investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s latest economic upswing, says Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister of Industry and Commerce.
Minister Bathiudeen revealed this to Hong Kong based G. Sorokours of TARGET Business World. Sorokours, the reputed international business journalist, was interviewing Minister Bathiudeen for Fortune China Magazine on 22 Friday. The Fortune China mag is under licence of Time Inc. Sorokours’ TARGET Business World functions as the special section representative for Fortune China mag.

Fortune China Magazine is one of the first management magazines in the world to be published in Chinese language, and is not aimed at the usual news reader’s market but at the top Chinese business executive ranks spread across mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Fortune China magazine is owned and printed under licence of US based Time Inc. Published 18 times a year, Fortune China’s 2011 first half audited circulation stood at 182,000.

“With the end of a long drawn conflict just two years back, Sri Lanka is the new, emerging and promising frontier for cross border investors. The government has introduced attractive concessions for foreign investors. Among the key advantages for international investors in Sri Lanka are various tax reliefs and very nominal tax rates, the geographic location advantage of an emerging hub, a skilled and educated workforce with a high literacy rate of 93%, and continuously developing logistics infrastructure” Minister Bathiudeen said.
“Sri Lanka is in the process of organising in March 2012, an International exhibition and business forum “EXPO2012”. This would certainly be a good opportunity for you all to visit Sri Lanka, in large numbers, meet the Sri Lankan Business Community, and establish lasting and fruitful business relations. I wish to invite the Chinese businesses and investors to take part in this important event” Minister Bathiudeen said.

“In the first quarter of this year, our industry sector grew by 10%. Having recorded an impressive 8.1% economic growth, Sri Lanka is expected to grow at an even higher rate of 9% in 2012 and 2013. At the same time, our per capita GDP has also increased substantially, to record at US $ 2400. What is important to note is, that we have witnessed these improvements in our economy, across almost all the sectors. With these macro-economic developments, Sri Lanka is now seen, as a fast growing economy in Asia and to turn into the ‘Wonder of Asia’”, the Minister revealed.
