USS Carl Vinson Partners with Uruguay for Southern Seas 2010
UNITED STATES - 6 MARCH 2010

USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70)--At Sea -- USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) will conduct operations March 7, with Uruguay off the coast of the South American nation as part of Southern Seas 2010, a component of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) Partnership of the Americas.

"One measure of the success of Southern Seas is how closely we get to operate with our South American partners," said Rear Adm. Ted Branch, Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1. "The Uruguayan Navy's leadership and dedication to peacekeeping missions is noteworthy and its contributions to regional and global security are robust. It's not very often that we get to work with and increase our interoperability with Uruguay and we're embracing this opportunity to train with the Uruguayan navy."

Carl Vinson along with USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) will conduct various naval exercises with the Uruguayan navy including maneuvering drills and military-to-military exchanges by embarking subject matter experts to encourage the two-way flow of information. Guests will also view an aerial demonstration conducted by Vinson's embarked air wing components.

Carl Vinson recently completed similar operations with Brazil following a port visit in Rio de Janeiro.

"We are excited about this chance to partner with Uruguay," said Vinson's Commanding Officer Capt. Bruce H. Lindsey. "Uruguay is a recognized leader in international peacekeeping operations and we foresee a great exchange during our time together."

Also conducting operations with Uruguay is USS Bunker Hill, Destroyer Squadron 1 and air wing components from CVW 17, VFA 81, VAW 125, VRC 40, and HS 15, which are all currently assigned to CSG 1.

UNITED STATES - 9 MARCH 2010

USS CARL VINSON, At sea -- USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) will conduct operations with Argentina March 8-10 off the coast of the South American nation as part of Southern Seas 2010, in an exercise designated "GRINGO-GAUCHO" by the Argentine Navy.

Southern Seas 2010 is a component of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command Partnership of the Americas.

"We are happy to have the opportunity to work with the Argentines, especially as they celebrate their bicentennial this year," said Rear Adm. Ted Branch, commander, Carrier Strike Group 1. "Our time here will have extra meaning as we build upon our partnership together."

Carl Vinson along with USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), Destroyer Squadron 1 and components from Carrier Air Wing 17 expect to conduct various naval exercises including military-to-military exchanges, an air wing exchange, cross-deck operations for Argentine helicopters and low approaches from Argentine aircraft.

"By working side by side we are best able to improve the interoperability between our militaries and improve our capabilities together," said Branch. "We're seeking to take advantage of every opportunity during our transit to further enhance the already strong relationship with Argentina."

Carl Vinson recently participated in similar operations with Brazil and Uruguay as they continue Southern Seas 2010.

"The opportunity to operate with the Argentine Navy is one that does not come along very often for U.S. Navy aircraft carriers," said Vinson's Commanding Officer Capt. Bruce H. Lindsey. "We look forward to learning valuable lessons from each other during our time here that will benefit all of us for years to come."

The Argentine Navy participated in last year's amphibious Southern Partnership Station deployment with USS Oak Hill (LSD 52), which included the delivery of two UH-3 helicopters to the Argentines.

USS Carl Vinson is participating in Southern Seas 2010 as part of a scheduled homeport shift to San Diego.

"It is rare to have the chance to work with our Chilean partners for the amount of time that we have over the next ten days," said Rear Adm. Ted Branch, commander, Carrier Strike Group 1. "This is a tremendous learning opportunity for all of us as we operate together."

USS Carl Vinson Visits Callao, Peru
UNITED STATES - 29 MARCH 2010

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) dropped anchor off the coast of Callao, Peru, for a scheduled port visit in the South American nation as part of Southern Seas 2010, a major component of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command's Partnership of the Americas.

The in port period follows four days of combined operations between Carl Vinson Strike Group and the Peruvian Navy and Air Force.

During the port visit the strike group Sailors will participate in several community relation projects and various Morale, Welfare and Recreation activities.

"Partnerships involve direct two-way interaction to truly be effective, said Rear Adm. Ted Branch, commander, Carrier Strike Group 1. "This port visit gives our Sailors a chance to really interact with the Peruvian people and at the same time get some well-deserved rest and recreation after all their hard work."

While in port, the strike group will attend several events sponsored by the government of Peru and will host various civil and military leaders during a reception on board the Carl Vinson.

"Southern Seas 2010 is about interacting with people and these interactions promote understanding," said Branch. "Our Sailors will experience a deeper appreciation and knowledge of Peruvian culture."

The port visit is the latest for Carl Vinson's crew, who visited Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in February 2010 and participated in a variety of activities both on and off the ship.

"The appeal of the Navy has always been to see the world, so the crew is very excited about our second port visit in South America and is eager to participate in the many community relations projects we have planned," said Capt. Bruce H. Lindsey, Carl Vinson's commanding officer. "Our Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department has done a great job of providing tours for the crew which is on its first deployment in over four years. They can get out and enjoy the culture of the wonderful country of Peru."

Following the port visit, Carl Vinson will continue with Southern Seas 2010 and meet with more South American military and civilian representatives.
