HYDERABAD: A 23-year-old techie, who ran away from home three days ago, taking Rs.4 lakh in cash, was found undergoing treatment at a corporate hospital to enhance his height. Doctors performed surgery on both of his knees.

However, the parents blamed the hospital for not informing them about the surgery after their son approached them. However, it is learnt that the youth lied to the hospital authorities that his parents were in the USA.

According to police, Nikhil Reddy, 23, an IT professional and resident of Dulapally in Petbasheerabad police limits, ran away from home three days ago taking Rs.4 lakh in cash with him. As Nikhil Reddy did not return home, his parents lodged a ‘man missing’ complaint with Petbasheerabad police.

During the course of investigation, police traced Nikhil Reddy to Lakdikapul, based on his mobile phone signals and found him admitted to Global Hospital. A team of police personnel, along with his parents, visited the hospital and were shocked to see Nikhil Reddy lying unconscious on the bed.

A duty doctor informed them that Nikhil Reddy got admitted to the hospital to get treatment for enhancing his height. A team of doctors performed knee surgery to increase his height by three inches. Nikhil Reddy is already 5.7 feet high.

As the doctors explained the procedure for knee surgery, the parents and family members lost their cool and accused the doctors of conducting the surgery without informing them.

There was mild tension at the hospital after Nikhil’s parents and family members staged a dharna demanding that the police take action. Later, the parents approached Saifabad police and lodged a fresh complaint. Based on the complaint, police have registered a case under Section 420 (cheating) of IPC.

However, doctors at the hospital stated that they conducted the surgery based on medico-legal guidelines. At the time of getting admitted to the hospital, Nikhil Reddy told the doctors that his parents were in the USA.

Dr Shibaji Chattopadhyaya, chief operating officer of Global Hospitals, stated that the surgery does not fall under the clinical guidelines for medico-legal cases. Hence, hospital has not informed the police about the same. The hospital authorities had fully explained to Nikhil about the risk, cost of treatment and due consent was taken from the patient before providing treatment, he added.

“As per the declaration, the patient has given the date of birth as January 23, 1994. The hospital is in no way legally bound to check the credentials and background of the patient unless anything suspicious is noted. The patient is a major and consulted the doctor for surgery.” Chattopadhyaya clarified.

LeG Lengthening Surgery

To perform the surgery for height gain, the experts cut both the leg bones and would fix a device called the Taylor-Spatial Frame (TSF) and slowly grow the new bone. The maximum possible increase in length is 7-10 cm.
