Political leadership has taken bold steps to enhance trade
* Finance minister says trade between India and Pakistan has increased as the positive import list has been abolished and now a negative list consisting of a very few items remains
ISLAMABAD: Political leadership has taken bold steps to broaden and enhance regional cooperation between South and Central Asian regions.
Speaking at South and Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Contact Group meeting in Tokyo on Friday, Finance Minister Hafeez Shaikh highlighted the steps taken by the political leadership in Pakistan for increasing the regional cooperation. He said trade between India and Pakistan has increased as the positive import list has been abolished and now a meagre negative list consisting of a very few items remains.
He said both India and Pakistan eased the visa policy for businessmen. The government of Pakistan also granted India the Most-Favoured Nation status. He said these decisions would help increase the trade and business contacts between the two countries.
He emphasised the need for developing an overarching framework for regional cooperation underlining the importance of private sector as a driving force for inter-regional economic cooperation. He said private sector has the potential to invest in the infrastructure projects for informed connectivity both intra and inter-regional in Asia.
Contact Group Under Secretary Robert Hormats appreciated the role played by the Pakistans leadership in furthering the economic cooperation between the regional countries of South Asia and also among the countries of South and Central Asia.
He said due to Pakistans leadership role the regions have come closer with each other and this would help in the betterment of economies and prosperity of the masses.
Representatives of the South and Central Asian countries, representative of World Bank and Asian Development Bank participated in this meeting. Foreign Ministry of Japan hosted this meeting.
Shaikh also held meetings with US Department of Treasury Assistant Secretary Charles Collyns and Finance Minister of Iran Dr Seyed Shamseddin Hosseini on the margins of the annual meetings of World Bank and International Monetary Fund 2012.
They exchanged views on the ways and steps for increased cooperation in socio-economic and political fields.
