ENDURANCE-160 Multi-Role Support Ship : Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd

The Endurance 160 class is a multi-purpose amphibious ship fulfilling the role of LPD, and LHD. An interesting feature is its 2 elevator, that give it a capability to put its aircraft into the hangar, rather than parking it on the flight deck.

With the advent of F-35B STOVL, this ship could be double as an aircraft carrier. As Singapore is forever short of manpower and provisioning of aircraft carrier is expensive, the ship is design with very high automation in mind. The ship is expected to be manned by 140 crews.

Displacement: 14,500 ton
Length 163m (534.6ft)
Beam 25.6m (83.9ft)
Speed (Max) 22-knots
Range 7,000nm at 15-knots
Compliment 140
Troop Capacity 400

Pretty small ship. No more than 5 F35s can operate on that. And only 140 crew members is pretty small for that ship to handle. But thats just me.

Great news -the way to go forward-very cost effective

Indonesia state owned company (PT PAL) also has already had a model of its own helicopter carrier with similar size as this Singaporeans ship model. I think it can be useful as a submarine search and also become logistic and troops carrier as well. If Singapore has F-35....marine variant, it can also be useful to them. Singapore has had trouble to find training zone for their fighter pilots, so by using this ship..they can train their F-35 pilots on the sea.

Indonesia on the other way doesnt want to buy F-35..since we have our own stealth fighter program with South Korea, but we have bought Apache Guardian (the most sophisticated Apache ever) which is also useful for attacking ships, so I think Indonesia can also use this carrier for Apache carrier. Time will tell, which one that will build it first, Indonesia or Singapore.....

The brochure doesn't say anything about F-35B, it talks only about medium lift helicopters. F-35B does not have folding wings and is 10,7m wide and 15,67m long.

Look at the brochure page 2 diagrams, the elevators of the ship are just slightly wider and longer than SH-60 helicopters with folded rotors.

MH-60S Airframe Dimensions

Operating width53 ft 8 in16.4 m (= rotor diameter)

Folded Length40 ft 11 in12.5 m
Folded width10 ft 8 in3.3 m

The elevators just might take an SH60 with tail not folded lengthwise, but still quite possibly fall short of the length of the F35B. Supposing it does fit in length, width would remain a problem: even if the elevator is twice the width of the SH60 folded, it falls significantly short of the 10,7m needed for F-35B. Not a chance of Endurance-160 hosting F-35B other than on main flight deck.
