KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution recommending that the Sindh government approach the federal government to declare Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi and Pushto national languages of Pakistan.

Moving the resolution, Pakistan Muslim League – Functional (PML-F) assembly member Mahtab Akbar Rashdi said that before Partition, the Sindhi language had the status of a national language, which it unfortunately does not hold any more.

He added that Pakistan’s neighboring country India has given 22 languages the status of national languages.

“The government of India has declared even Sindhi a national language, but we are deliberately ignoring it,” he said.

The members of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supported the resolution.

Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Sikandar Mandhro referred to a resolution moved by his party MNA Nawab Yousuf Talpur in National Assembly some time ago. He said that the resolution was referred to a special committee where it didn’t find much support.

The MQM member Khalid Ahmed suggested that the languages of Hazara and Seraiki people should also be included in the resolution.

Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani was of the view that people are emotionally attached with their mother-tongue, therefore, all regional languages should be given this status without delay.

“During the British rule Sindhi was the official language of the province and it was strictly implemented in all courts and offices. No doubt Urdu is our national language, but the same status must be given to Sindhi and other regional languages,” he added.

Sindh Assembly also adopted a motion to ensure that the Sindhi language must be taught in all private and public schools, and colleges in the province.

Resolution against attacks

Sindh Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution against attacks on mosques, temples, churches, the police force, the Frontier Corps and armed forces. It demanded law-enforcement agencies and the federal government establish the writ of state.

Having numerous National Languages is the same as having no National Languages at all because then the term 'National Language' doesn't really mean anything except a Politically Correct feel-good expression of Pious Sentiments that are worth nothing !

It make sense to have Urdu & only Urdu as the National Language of Pakistan - a language that is Pakistan's Lingua Franca which means it is understood, in varying degrees, across the length & breadth of Pakistan, from Multan to Mustung & from Skardu to Sukhur !

What we should have is a separate category of 'Cultural or Regional Languages' where Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto, Baluchi Barahui, Gojri, Balti etc. & other major & minor languages spoken by numerous nations & tribes that inhabit Pakistan are our cherished treasure & they must be protected & nurtured however they should be a source of unity & diversity not of ethno-linguistic nationalism !

12. National Language
The 1973 Constitution has declared Urdu as the national language of Pakistan. However English has been retained as the official language for 15 years. Similarly regional languages have been provided full protection. - See more at: Salient features of the Constitution of 1973 | guesspapers.net

Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto & Punjabi should be made national languages of Pakistan. Urdu will obviously remain for communication anyway.

Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto & Punjabi are regional language and I agree with @Armstrong ....Nation is not divided into pieces....the Nation should be considered as 1...we have 1 flag, 1 national anthem and hence 1 language! Stick to unity instead of trying to tear up the already broken nation!

Why you guys have too much fear from the regional Pakistani languages.

No fear....I aim at unification...How can you unify someone by allowing division? Besides the word "national language" carries its representative meaning....

We have no problem with regional languages in fact many are thought as 2nd languages in the regions itself....which is fine....nothing wrong there...but nation is 1, flag is 1, anthem is 1, why have 5-6 national languages? Because allowing 4 will result in another 4 to push for it and then another 4...then it will become really confusing!

We have assholes waiting for a mistake to happen to cash in on it and get recognized and push for breaking up the nation! Just to avoid and oppose these assholes...
