Sindh govt assures land for wind power projects

ISLAMABAD - Government of Sindh has assured that land will be allotted to investors intending to set up wind power projects of 1,000 MW by 2013.
This was discussed during a meeting held today with Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar in the chair participated by Chairman Sindh Board of Investment, Zubair Motiwala, Secretary Sindh BoI, Naheed Durrani, CEO AEDB, Arif Allauddin and senior officials of Sindh Government and AEDB. The Sindh Government is revising land utilisation policy in order to facilitate investors and draft will be sent to Ministry of Water and Power with in couple of days. The land will be provided to investors within 15 days after incorporating input from the Ministry in land utilisation policy, Minister was informed.
It was further told that land has already been allotted to three investors for setting up wind power projects while some others have applied to explore wind potential in coastal area. It was decided in the meeting that allotment of land will be cancelled who have not completed formalities despite getting LoIs from AEDB and Sindh BoI. It was also decided that land would be allotted to investors as per capacity of project. The Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar said that government has planned to produce 1,000 MW cheaper power from wind and an incentive based tariff has been announced along with other incentives.
The investors have been asked to complete their formalities and financial close after getting possession of land within next six to eight months and generate electricity by 2013. The upfront tariff will be given only those investors who will fulfil their commitment to produce electricity by 2013. Govt is encouraging investors in the alternative energy development projects.
