Siddhartha Shankar Ray passes away

KOLKATA: Siddhartha Shankar Ray , former West Bengal chief minister, veteran Congress leader and legal luminary, passed away at 6.50 pm in his Kolkata residence on Saturday after battling a protracted illness.

He was 90 and is survived by his wife Maya Ray, who like him is also a barrister. Mr Ray, who was also a former Punjab governor and Indian ambassador to the US, was suffering from kidney disorder for months and was on dialysis since March. On Saturday, he couldn't withstand another round of dialysis and died at his Beltala Road residence. A close confidante of late prime minister Indira Gandhi in the 70s, Ray was appointed union minister in-charge of West Bengal affairs in 1971 and became the state s chief minister in 1972.

During his tenure as CM, Ray earned a reputation for handling the Naxalite agitation effectively. A close friend of Marxist patriarch and late former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu , Ray however, earned the unenviable reputation of imposing emergency in the state during his final years as CM.

Ray was chief minister between 1972 and 1977 and was the last Congress chief minister of the state.

p.s. For all those who don't know S.S.Ray was the governor of Punjab during the time of Khalistani movement and did a great job in subduing them. The present decision of government of Punjab speaks volumes about how much support the state has nowadays for those separatists.
He effectively wiped out the naxalites of Bengal during their first and early uprising. He also played a keyrole in annihilating the Khalistanis.

Operation BlueStar will always be remembered as the biggest failure of military operations in India. The whole event got many innocents killed and injured.
S.S.Ray influenced Indira Gandhi to take military action against rebels based on his experiences with the naxalites. It was out of his hands when the military generals sat down in the round table to chalk out the game plan.
