Umer Gul is crap, he does not deserve to be mentioned in the Akhtar thread. Akhtar is a very good bowler, His Record from 2001 to 2005 is devastating and that too in one of the major periods of batsmen Domination.

Akthar in comparison to Waqar had equally lethal peak, Waqar's peak is generally acknowledged as a pretty lengthy one (1989-1994) which is not correct, Akthar from 1 Jan 2000 to 1 Jan 2006 took 127 wickets @ 20.56

And if you remove the injury affected end of 2006 ,then from 1 jan 2000 to 1 jan 2005 then he took 110 wickets @ 19.31 in 22 matches.

Whereas Waqar (in his well known peak between 1989-1994) took 190 wickets: 33 tests: @ 19.15

Hardly anything to differentiate!

Akthar could crack open any batting lineup in the world at his peak.

The only thing that prevents Akhtar from being an all time great like Waqar in my mind is the longevity factor.

Umer Gul is only good in ODIs and T20s. VERY ordinary in tests. Shoaib is far better (or rather was) than Gul.

Watching Shoaib bowl over the last decade has been a thrilling experience and sets your heart racing... dosent matter if you are a pakistan supporter or not, its just the passion and aggression with which he plays cricket and ofcourse the ability to get the batsmen jumping around on dead flat wickets only he could do that. There are very few bowlers in history of cricket who could bowel this fast and for as long a period as Shoaib has. Many people argue about the longevity factor, remember Shoaib is an outright fast bowler, no half measures... he doesnot bowl fast medium at even the age of 35 he is regularly doing 90-95 MPH. pick up any fast bowler in the history who bowled this quick and all of them broke down in 2-4 years and came back as fast medium pacers. (waqar, lille, thomson are a few names that spring to mind)
