Saab, Boeing test Ground launched Small Diameter Bomb

Saab will present the newly-developed Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) for the first time at DSEI.

Earlier this year Saab and Boeing tested the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB). By integrating the SDB I air-launched weapon with the M26 ground-based rocket motor (from the Multiple Launch Rocket System) Saab and Boeing created a new class of precision attack system, the company said in a statement Thursday.

Successful live-fire tests showed that the bomb can withstand a rocket artillery launch with no compromise in its flight performance. Now, visitors to London’s DSEI defence and security exhibition this month will be able to evaluate the new weapon system for the first time.

“The new GLSDB is a system that will give armed forces around the world capability to engage any target. Together with Boeing, we now can offer capability for the United States, as well as the global market,” says Görgen Johansson, head of Saab Business Area Dynamics.

The GLSDB is a long-range precision attack solution that expands the capabilities of armed forces. Highly effective and accurate over long ranges, the GLSDB has the ability to fly complex trajectories and maneuvers to strike targets that cannot be reached by conventional direct fire weapons. It meets the evolving needs of armed forces today and tomorrow, when fighting in complex scenarios.

if its works RIP to our old MLRS
Not really sir ge!

Even if our enemy inducts these it wont make much difference. The Advantage of the GLSDM over conventional MBRL systems is that while rocket artillery follow a ballistic trajectory and hence can be intercepted by active defense systems such as Land-Based Phalanx Weapon System or V-CAM or V-SHORAD or Iron dome etc. however this rocket launched SDM will deploy wings once it reaches a certain height and cam then glide towards the target following a programmed trajectory which is much more difficult to intercept. However, for us, it will change nothing. The reason is we do not posses the capability to counter normal conventional artillery rockets and wont be able to intercept his one either so nothing changes. It would have been a problem if we had some system to counter conventional MBRL systems and all that investment would have gone wasted if enemy inducted this new platform. That is not the case of practically it changes nothing for us. :)

Sir,
Do you think it can be brought down with laser antimissile defense systems or with CIWS i.e Phalanx ?
