The development of the S-500 Triumfator-M missile system, capable of performing both anti-aircraft and missile defense functions, is expected to be completed in four years, said Igor Ashurbeili, the general director of the Head System Design Bureau of the Almaz-Antey concern.

“The task set to us under the state armaments program is to develop the Triumfator-M system. It refers to the S-500 project, the project to create a mobile missile defense system by 2015. This new system will be capable of tackling its tasks on the move and advance to any direction that comes under threat, and to any war theater critical at this particular moment,” Ashurbeili said in an interview with the daily Kommersant, published on Friday.

The S-500 is a mobile missile defense system capable of hitting targets at a long range and high altitude. It must have the characteristics of the Moscow missile defense system, but with a mobile capability, Ashurbeili said.

The statement gives too little information on the system. Most of what they say it would be is what they claim is already in the S-400 and S-300. Maybe the S-400 is outdated before it is fully mobilized?

Is there any plan for indian involvement in s-500 project or india will go after its indigenous AAD & PAD missile defence systems....

i heard that development of phase 2 of missile defence system,having far greater range(said to be hypersonic missiles) will be undertaken after the completion of first stage in2013.

India should go for indigeneous AAD & PAD. However I am sure soon we'll see S-500 in our inventory.

Yes it will out perform the PAC-3. however it will not out perform the standard missile 3. Which by the way is already fielded and being configured into a land based system as well.

Russia Develops the S-500 - a New Anti-Missile Defense System

Russian Air Force Deputy Commander for Air Defense Lieut. General Sergei Razygrayev confirmed in an interview with the Moscow Ekho radio that Russia is developing a new, more advanced air and missile defense system designated S-500. The new system development is expected to be completed by 2012. The missile is designed to intercept primarily medium range missiles - what Russia considers 'a new type of threat'.

The new missile defense system will be capable of intercepting targets at target-speeds up to five kilometers per second, out of earth upper atmosphere. The S-500 is expected to have an extended range of up to 600 km and simultaneously engage up to 10 targets. The system will be capable of destroying hypersonic and ballistic targets. S-500 will be a successor of the S-300 developed in the 1990s and operate in tandem with the S-400 currently entering service with Russian air defense forces.

Both systems were designed as air defense systems with some short-range-missile defense capability. First evidence of the development of the new missile was provided by the Russian Air Force Commander in Chief Col.-Gen. Alexander Zelin earlier this month. Concept evaluation of the S-500 began in the early 2000s and was slow to proceed due to apparent violation of the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. At the time, the US and Russia discussed deploying such system as part of a unified missile defense capability.
