On 4 March the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a "surprise check" of the 14th Rocket Division, equipped by Topol ICBMs, headquartered at Yoshkar-Ola in the Mar-El Republic. The inspection was said to include nuclear weapons storage and handling facilities. This inspection followed a series of no-notice surprise inspections conducted in February.
An initial exercise that started on 17 January included Topol (SS-25 'Sickle'), Topol-M (SS-27 'Sickle B'), and Yars (SS-27 Mod 2) mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) deploying to dispersed operating locations. Subsequently, the RS-36M2 Voyevode (SS-18 Mod 5 'Satan') equipped by 62nd Rocket Division, headquartered at Uzhur in Krasnoyarsk kray, jointed the exercise through a low-notice inspection, the Ministry of Defense announced on 9 February.
