Russia has unveiled a deadly new weapon that is powerful enough to rip through any type of armour.

A team of Russian scientists have successfully tested their first railgun - which relies on electromagnetic forces rather than explosives or propellant.

According to experts at the Institute of High Temperatures' branch in Shatura, Moscow, the railgun can fire shells at three kilometers per second.

During the latest test, a 15 gram plastic cylinder fired by the railgun went through an aluminum plate several centimeters thick.

Shatura Institute's director Alexei Shurpov told Zvezda TV: "The railgun is a big boost to our study of high energy physics as we are now ready to build apparatuses working at speeds exceeding 4.5 kilometers a second."

One of the countries pioneering the railgun development is the US, which is working on a super-powerful railgun that is able to fire rounds at speeds up to Mach 7.5, which is about 9,100km per hour and covers a distance of 400km.

US Navy had presented the completed weapon with its ordnance in 2016.

However, the report noted that one issue with the US design was that the projectile's impact becomes weaker if it is hitting a target that is far away.

The Russian railgun development has reportedly not produced any military breakthrough, but it is has been considered as a major scientific achievement.

Railguns use electricity instead of gunpowder to accelerate a projectile at six or seven times the speed of sound.

This means the railgun can fire further than conventional guns and maintain enough kinetic energy to inflict tremendous damage.

The Russians are mostly talk, yes. If the US decided to establish a no fly zone in Syria, there is little Russia would be able to do to stop US forces from doing so.

Russian have shot down countless foreign aircraft during the Cold War including US fighters. Your entire argument is that of satire. Neither Russia nor the US would astablish any no fly zones in Syria and if either did the other side would ignore it, so it would either turn into a war between NATO and Russia or one of the two sides would be exposed for bluffing.


Russia fighters regularly fly over US naval ships and aircraft carriers while those ships are in international waters, aircraft carriers essentially have a no fly zone around them and US naval ships will fire warning shots at any ships that come too close yet those US ships have not fire towards Russian ships nor have they even attempted to shoot down Russian aircraft near their ships.

I don't know what's more sad, the fact that you cant read or the fact that your post got likes or the fact that every time you insult Russia it backfires on you and you get banned.


Russia never claimed that that specific rail gun can achieve 6 or 7 times the speed of sound. The article claimed that railguns in general can achieve those types of speeds.

Russia said if any of their service members were in danger they would protect them. On the other hand, Russia is arming Hezballah, the same Hezballah that humiliated Israel in 2006 and Israel is not do anything about it. Not only that Russia is exterminating terrorists that Israel supports, again Israel isn't doing one thing about it.

If I recal Israeli jets over Syria were intercepted by Russian jets, is it any wounder the Israelis now only fire at Syrian army positions from inside Israel?

If Russia was arming Hezbollah you would quickly realize the contact with any Russian forces in the region would be lost in no time.

And no, we don't fire at Syrian positions from inside Israel, since the Syrians tried to destroy the Israeli F-16 jets with S-200 when they penetrated into Syrian airspace, and missed.

Railgun technology is not something new. It was a big field in the 60s and 70s and both USSR and USA spent plenty on R&D.

The technological limit is currently the huge amounts of electricity needed that make it quite impractical for battlefield use. Until smaller, more powerful capacitors are developed this will remain only in sci-fi movies.
