Regional Power Pakistan
Pakistan is a country with 230 million populations of various diverse cultures and languages. Each ethnicity in Pakistan has a rich history. Pakistan is also one of the largest markets in the world due to the fact that it’s a 230 million strong population and is rapidly progressing. Pakistan’s geography also makes it a very important country in the region, it connects Central Asia to Indian subcontinent and, Central Asia to Arabian Sea. It also shares a maritime boundary with Oman and is right at the mouth of strait of Hormuz. Presently, Pakistan’s neighbours are India, Afghanistan, Iran and China. Despite all the natural advantages Pakistan has, it increasingly looks like it’s becoming irrelevant in the region due to it showing many weaknesses. There’s many factors to this such as internal stability and its neighbours.
Internally:
Internally Pakistan is getting more unstable day by day and this isn’t the first time such political turmoil is happening. Pakistan has newer in its history had a prime minister which completed their complete tenure. During every term, the prime minister is ousted usually causing political instability in the country.
How it affects Pakistan’s regional power:
Due to the political instability almost always in Pakistan, many countries see this as our weakness and it undermines of power.
Afghanistan:
Pakistan and Afghanistan have a rough history since 1947. Afghanistan was the only country, after Pakistan got its independence, to vote against Pakistan’s admission to UN. For decades after Pakistan’s independence, Afghanistan supported anti Pakistan elements and even got to the point where Afghan army troops invaded Pakistani land a couple times most famously in Bajaur between 1960 and 1961. Currently, Taliban form a government in Kabul. Despite Taliban’s promises of not allowing groups to use their land to carry out attacks on other countries, TTP continues to use afghan land to carry out attacks in Pakistan.
How it affects Pakistan’s regional power:
Taliban has considerable influence worldwide amongst many Muslims especially in Pakistan. Furthermore, the biggest hindrance in Pakistan’s ability to access Central Asia is an unstable Afghanistan or an anti Pakistan Afghanistan. Our neighbours india have spent plenty of resources to make sure Afghanistan stays anti Pakistan and the anti Pakistan sentiment remains strong in Afghanistan. It’s not clear yet if Taliban are pro pak or anti pak however they are turning a blind eye to Pakistan’s enemy TTP and even helping it in many scenarios. TTP and afghan based terrorists has destabilized much of western Pakistan for many years.
Afghan Taliban having leverage on Islamists and providing shelter to Pakistan’s enemies undermines Pakistan’s regional influence and power. Depending on whether Taliban adopt an anti pak approach if not it can hinder our ability to connect and do trade with Central Asia as well.
What should Pakistan do:
Pakistan needs to put its interests first when it comes to Afghanistan. Afghanistan and afghan Taliban are still loosely united. Pakistan MUST have its own proxy groups inside afghan Taliban which are pro pak. Additionally, Pakistan MUST have ties with all stakeholders in Afghanistan be it northern alliance or Taliban. Through these ties Pakistan must secure an route to Central Asia and have its own proxy group in Afghanistan dedicated to protect the route. Pakistan must also have influence owed Taliban ministers and must ensure pro pak Taliban groups have lots of ministries. Using our proxy’s, Pakistan must ensure ttp doesn’t get peace in Afghanistan and is hunted down while Afghanistan starts having a pro pak narrative through our propaganda. We must make Afghanistan our backyard with our influence and our proxies dominating if we want to be a regional power.
Iran:
Pakistan-Iran relations under the Shah were very strong however after the Islamic revolution in Iran, relations have declined. In 1994 Iran voted against Pakistan’s proposal in OIC for Kashmir which essentially saved cash strapped india from being sanctioned at a time where it had even mortgaged its gold reserves. Pak-Iran border has had many armed smugglers and terrorist groups operating. Pakistan has suffered a lot from Baloch separatists groups based in Iran.
How it affects Pakistan’s regional power:
Irans sheltering anti pak group undermines the stability in Balochistan. Also, Iran is threatening our allies in the region like Azerbaijan and Middle Eastern countries.
Iran is also actively working on nuclear weapons and is pretty close to get them. IF Iran gets nuclear weapons, Pakistan will have one openly hostile and one semi hostile neighbour with nukes. Iran, right after pulwama happened, also threatened strike in Pakistan due to a militant attack happening in Iranian controlled Balochistan. IF Iran can stand up to Arabs, Israel and west and do what it’s doing, imagine what it would do to Pakistan once it gets nukes? Iran has been allies with india for decades now. Serving RAW officer who was arrested by Pakistan, made his way to Pakistan via Iran. Middle East and Azerbaijan are our allies getting threatened by Iran. Forget Middle East, Azerbaijan is one of our closest allies which was recently threatened by Iran. What kind of regional power let’s its allies in the region get bullied by countries weaker than it? Iran is b*tching us in the region and we can’t even issue a statement against Iran for threatening our allies sovereignty. Even Taliban issue threats and have regional influence
What should Pakistan do:
Firstly, we need to ensure our allies sovereignty no matter what even if it means sending troops overseas. Being a regional power requires you to send troops when needed to help you allies in need. Pakistan MUST ensure Iran doesn’t get nukes or else it would put Pakistan in a very tough position. Pakistan MUST also issue statements when required against Iran and supporting our allies territorial integrity. IF needed Pakistan MUST use proxies inside Iran. Pakistan MUST have influence never Iranian Sunnis just like Iranian has influence over Pakistani Shias SO IF Iran wants to play hard ball we can hit them where it hurts. We should step up overseas deployments and send more troops dedicated to protecting our allies in Middle East like Saudi Arabia.
When looked at from Saudi’s point of view, they made Pakistan their ally to be used against Iran in the region. What did we do? We didn’t help them in their wars and decided to stay “neutral”.
Being a regional power means sacrificing lives to protect your power in the region. Yemen historically has been closer to Pakistan than Iran.
India:
Since independence, Pakistan’s and Indias relations have been bad and the two have fought 4 wars. Things are worse now that an extremist fanatical government is in charge of India.
How it affects Pakistan’s regional power:
Indians miss no change in turning any country in the region anti Pakistan. All the venom it’s spews against Pakistan internationally and their PM even says publicly they want to isolate Pakistan diplomatically.
What Pakistan should do:
Pakistan MUST expand its influence in the countries surrounding India. For example Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bangladesh, Myanmar.
For Bangladesh, Maldives and Myanmar (Rohingya areas) we can use islam to have influence over those countries since india is increasingly becoming anti Islam while these countries are Muslim. We MUST expand our trade with them and, fund and open many madressas in those countries. We SHOULD offer easy visas for students of these countries to get education in Pakistan.
For Sri Lanka, it has been struggling with its debt recently. We should offer Sri Lanka a $500 million usd or even $1 billion usd loan but get some sovereign guarantees from it. If it can’t pay back it’s loan to us, it has to give us an airbase and naval base in Sri Lanka just like it gave Chinese a port.
For Nepal we should use Chinas influence over it to get closer to it and establish our influence over it as well. Now some of you might disagree with what I’ll say but we should use tablighi jamaat to spread Islam in Nepal and intern use that to have influence over Nepal.
Pakistan should be a regional power!
Pakistans influence should be over:
1) Islamic world
2) Central Asia
3) Middle East
Becoming a regional power isn’t easy and won’t come cheap. Yes we’ll see many hardships if we embark on this quest to become a regional power however, it only suits the worlds 5th largest country in terms of population to become a regional power at last. This won’t come by staying “neutral” or by not wanting to fight. If we truly want to be a regional power we will have to fight for the title and get our hands messy. We will have to create our own bloc and use proxies.
It’s time Pakistan emerges to the position that suits it!
