The way i see it, with the Russians on our west and its pet India on east, it would have been abomination, we would have been in alot worse situation we are in right now.
Russian presence in Afghanistan was a direct threat to our sovereignty. Talibans aren't, The Americans aren't.

Strategically important region is Pakistan not Afghanistan, its hard for me to believe that Russians would have stopped right there in Afghanistan.

The commies killed a million people. The militants killed around 200,000. This war was against the Communists, and it was a won war. There are no regrets.

Had the Northern Alliance defeated the Pakistan-backed Taliban back in the 90's, Afghanistan may have had a brighter future today.

The war now, is against the ideology we instilled in the Taliban during the 90's.

I dont see how would you justify russia on one end and India on the other. There was not much of a choice. It would have been worse. Every one knows how strong communists were in the north.

Very nerrow perception from Afghan war, how easily you stated that "what did we achieve out of that "Jihad (wrong word you used in fact Afghan war, you can't criticize meanings of Jihad in this context)? What we got? We pushed back USSR from its aggressive position at far distance, it was the need of time where interests of USA have combined at that time, if there was not Afghan war then you never could make progress in atomic technology one level we stand today. Investment in military line & up gradation. Plus & minus present in every situation, so what was main plus i mentioned above & minus is: we introduces Kalashnikov culture in the country, our economics fell to support refuges, we lost economical balance while fight & support so don't think on side, accept all realities not only negatives.

So if for the need of time you changed yourselves then why at the end of war you can't change yourselves? oh yes you relaxed as "Zia the conquer" or "Pakistan the conquer", it was Zia's duty if he added word Jihad in educational policy then he must has to remove this word from the time when they already felt that Russia will pull its army. Ok lets say that Zia is dead then this responsibility was their followers in government. They have to change media campaigns to take out nation from this temporary set up. 12 years you celebrated you success and you awake when US policy maker hit you for their further strategy in 9/11 while you relaxed. This is the reason. Don’t blame about what me got or lose.

World is unipolar or bipolar doesn’t important, important is how you decide to take step. When Russia inserted its army into Afghanistan USA discussed all scenarios with allies, anti soviet countries, question rose that why our government/Honorable Musharaf didn’t take a time to discussed with neighbor countries? He is not only make wrong decision but create difficulties for Iran, China & Russian Federation (Not important we forced them retreat) but for the long run we have to think about strong countries who didn’t like the presence of USA in the region! History repeated itself. Why USA didn’t secure the border of his main ally in WOT at the first step? But everything went opposite and in addition they removed their security posts to give way in context of next policy to bombing over Pakistan territory why “because we have now the secure places for extremist” What the hell our strategic planner are doing? We have basic childish level of thinking as:

1979 – 1989 USA GOOD USSR BAD
1992 – 2010 USA BAD but …….. nobody whom we can say good.

We have to fix for ourselves that we can’t be as Western, they came to fight without knowing ground realities ok then ally responsible to give awareness before they step in. Stand with strong decision for your nation and peace of region.

The people whom you trained and after use you are killing them! Man, they are Muslims and Muslims have power to motivate people or rise emotions at least time just like flow of current and you all have to accept it, just imagine if this current flows against us ” what will happened”? I think you realize where policy makers were wrong or are wrong. You can’t win with weapons, from weapons fear those people who afraid to die or other nations or religions but where half of your citizen holding TT PISTOL or 7 MM while they sleeping and the religion or nation where the ideology of “Put life on pulse” your weapons are useless, but if you want to win or turn their thoughts then it will happen only with change of mind. NOT IDEOLOGY BUT MIND. Never come into pressure of west because they don’t know how people live in Pakistan & Afghanistan, their perceptions are very different. Design your own social policy without any foreign interference then you will get success and save your cities from back reaction. Put your interest at 1st level but not disturb peace rest of country.
