Raphael will develop a "war network" for the German army
December 12, 2019

Won with Germany's Atos Company in a network-based combat development project that coordinates all combat and unmanned combat forces and weapons. Will be based on Raphael's BNET and Fire Weaver technologies

Raphael and Atos GmbH (Germany) have won the tender of the German Ministry of Defense (BAAINBw) for the development of "transparent battlefield" technology. The purpose of this study is to develop connectivity and real-time information transfer between all combat forces and their possessions, including infantry, advanced armored vehicles (tanks and armored vehicles) and unmanned aerial vehicles. The German army seeks to develop information transfer capability and operational integration of several systems simultaneously. The "transparent battlefield" is a concept that represents the ability to obtain comprehensive information about the combat scene - both hostile targets and friendly means - their location and capabilities - and coordinate their operations.

Network-based tactical combat teams
The battlefield concept of the battlefield is that of "tactical combat teams". That is, diverse teams that include tools of various types and capabilities, including autonomous systems. Interestingly, one of the first successful applications of the tactical crew idea was in World War II, when the Germans built small combat teams built from a combination of tanks, infantry and artillery, which were able to greatly slow the pace of US and UK armies on the western front.
The Germans made it a choice, since the Allies had total air control that prevented them from concentrating large armor, but today the idea is renewed in light of the fact that most wars in the world are asymmetrical wars where homogeneous warfare is not an advantage, but for small and diverse teams. Raphael reported that as part of the contract, it and Atos will conduct demos and experiments from 2019-2023, after which they are expected to enter a project development phase that is expected to be completed by 2025.

The network selects a target and intercepts
Raphael will bring to the project a number of technologies based on digital battlefield management. One is the Fire Weaver system (pictured above) which also received the nickname "Smart Wise". This is actually a network-based attack system, or "warfare network": all weapons (fighter, tank, UAV, aircraft) are connected to the network and transmitted to it and to all other combat participants all information coming from their sensors, after the sensors have identified the target Her and set her position.

The core of the network serves as a kind of central brain that manages the fighting. It analyzes all the data, and selects which element of the network is most suitable to perform the shooting according to parameters such as location, line of sight, appropriate armament and the like. The shooter is given an execution order, and since he is already watching it - he can execute it immediately. Raphael reported that the system is capable of managing and destroying multiple targets simultaneously. In September 2019, it was reported that the Golani Brigade trained in operating the system in an exercise in the north of the country.

Another technology that Raphael will bring to the project is a broadband wireless communications network called BNET, which connects all combat forces in the defined arena. The network is based on an IP and radio-defined software (Software Defined Radio) that allows simultaneous two-way communication of voice, video and data between all combat forces, from soldier level to individual vehicles. The network enables ad-hoc construction (MANET - Mobile Ad-hoc Networking) and spectrum-efficient technology.

Router on any Walkie Talkie
Raphael has developed IP Radio software that enables embedding of an internal router at any endpoint. This software has a central meaning: Typically, wireless IP networks are based on a central router that receives information from all endpoints and distributes it back to them. This creates a bottleneck at the core of the network which impairs its work rate and closes it completely when there is excess information. Raphael's technology does not require a central router, and this bottleneck has been removed from the network.

The BNET network includes protection against break-in and disruption, and is implemented in several wireless devices of various sizes - from a manual device to an infantry soldier to heavier vehicles installed in vehicles. In fact, it provides the communications infrastructure through which the Fire Weaver battle management system operates.
