Good steps being taken by the Punjab Rangers. I wonder why can't we implement things before an incident takes place.
The Punjab Rangers have taken positions outside three jails of the province while the provincial prisons department will recruit new staff and impart commando and elite training to them for the outer security of jails, well placed sources told The Nation on Tuesday.
They said the army trainers were already imparting training to the prisons staff regarding firing and weapon handling. We are going to purchase the latest weapons to foil any terrorist activity, said a senior officer of the prisons department, who wished not to be named. The department will also hire more manpower for the external security of jails across the Punjab as the already running Military training programme was meant for the jails internal security. The military will train more than 2,000 jail officials in a one-month training programme. Among the officials who will get training include superintendents, deputy superintendents, 166 assistant superintendents and 1,900 jail warders.
The rangers will also impart training to the jail officials for the jails outer security. It is worth mentioning here that the district police was responsible for the external security of the jails. But due to its poor performance, the Punjab government has sought help from the rangers. The federal government has approved the deployment of the rangers outside the jails. No ranger was deployed till Tuesday outside the jails of Lahore. Inspector General Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir told this scribe, when contacted, that he had not so far been informed of the deployment of the rangers outside the jails. He said the rangers had conducted a joint survey regarding the jails security and they would decide on when and where the rangers should be deployed.
Sources in the Punjab Rangers said their jawans had reached Adyala, Dera Ghazi Khan and Faisalabad jails. They said about 500 to 600 jawans would perform their duties on these three jails while troops would remain standby for deployment at Kotlakhpat Jail and would be on call from the prisons department. The rangers will also impart training to the jail staff to fight terrorism. The officials of both the forces will conduct joint exercises. Rangers sources said the prisons department was also seeking their deployment at Mianwali Jail.
