Hi there,

I have seen that many Muslim charity organizations in UK get more active in Ramadhan to collect charity and funds in the name of Islam and in the name of poor deprived Muslims all over the world and some even collecting money in the name of Rohingya Muslims in western Burma. They play videos and documentaries in countries where Muslims are being oppressed or where they are in poor living conditions. Every single Islamic channel on sky (there are almost 11/12 Islamic channels ) run charity shows in the evening and offer different charity package from one pound a day to monthly package etc . My question is how many of these charities are reliable as they are in hundred if not in thousands. How can we know that they are practically doing the work which they promise or which they claim on tv screen? Or It is another way of using religion or religious sentiment for source of income ..as we see in these hajj and umrah package where price get double or triple if you go in ramadhan there . They take these Umrah and hajj as pure business while some ghreeb muslim awaam from developing countries sell all their property just to offer umrah and hajj in holy months

You have to do the research on these charity organizations yourself.

Depending on where the organization is it should spend no more than 10 cents of every dollar on administrative expenses. Meaning 90 cents of every dollar should be spent on the actual charity work.

Sometimes it's best to just give money to the local community members who need it they have a "more right on zakat" than someone in Pakistan, etc. As the $____ you give that person isn't going to be deducted by anyone.

As far as Hajj/ Umrah pricing as much as I agree with you, if one can't afford the cost it's not held against that person.

I am really not happy at the way charities seem to be popping up everyday and by God knows whom. In our community, the attitude is: I've given my money in good faith, what happens after I'll leave to Allah.

It's a very irresponsible and dangerous outlook. I know for a fact that in case of BD, a large portion of money raised by UK charities go to Jamaat affiliated madrassas, therefore affecting politics in the country unfairly.

They are all registered charities, so I'm sure there are accounting rules, but we are talking about Asians here - they always find a way to loot.

There needs to be a change in the way we give charity. There are millions of poor people who we can directly give money to, if we put a little time into it.

You are right but its not easy to verify their claims. I am living in UK so i cannot observe their ground work in different countries unless i take their words for it and assume that they are not lying about their work

accounting rules is simple for charity organization..no tax, no insurance as long as they are for charitable purpose and there is no annual return if its income is less than £10,000.. Its up to owner as they keep record of whatever you tell them about donations, income, expenditure, trustees etc.,, there is no others way to trace it

I agree with your last suggestion that its preferable to give money directly to needy ones but its not easy for those living in uk and want to donate for Muslims in Burma
