Sashi Tharoor "The erection of statues reminds me of old days of Roman Empire when people were distracted of their own oppression by circuses...Thus spectacle becomes a substitute of the substance of the reality"

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is likely to announce a 151-metre statue of Lord Ram on the banks of Sarayu river as a Diwali gift for the people of Ayodhya.

The proposal to construct the statue was discussed by the UP government a few months back and several meetings of the top officials of the culture and tourism ministry of the state have already taken place. The project is aimed at increasing tourism in Ayodhya.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier said, "I am going to Ayodhya for a grand Diwali celebration with a gift."

Sources in the Yogi Adityanath government have informed that the chief minister is expected to make the announcement of this project during his speech in Ayodhya on November 6.

Hundreds of crores of rupees will be spent for the construction of the tallest statue of Lord Ram which would be visible from all the corners of the city, said sources in the state government.

Speaking to India Today, additional chief secretary of the information department Avanish Awasthi said, "Tentatively 151-metre-tall statue will be built there and the decision was taken a few months back. However, the details regarding implementation and expenditure are still being worked out."

Responding to the possible announcement of the grand statue in Ayodhya, the chief priest of the Ram Janambhoomi Mahant Satyendra Das said, "This is being done to divert the minds of crores of Hindus that demand construction of Ram Mandir at the earliest from the government. Instead of this, a grand Ram temple shall be built in Ayodhya at the earliest."

Meanwhile, the Babri Masjid litigant Iqbal Ansari said, "We have no problem with the construction of Lord Ram statue on the banks of Saryuriver. However, no development work has been done in this city [Ayodhya] under the current regime. People in this city are unemployed and they seek jobs."

If it is an erection of an erection for the Indians to worship there is going to be a long long queue of worshippers hoping for fertility and infidelity.

The project to be funded by Union Tourism Ministry for the integrated tourism development of Ayodhya. All this while the states in the south of India are forced to bankroll this bankrupt state. Democracy in India is a con job where the Aryan Gangadeshi states use their electoral numbers to extract ransom from Tamilnadu etc

As an Indian I oppose building of any large statues. It is wasteful and our religious interpretation does not allow for this. ------ Coming from a South Indian Brahmin.

you look at any temple, the statues of gods are always small. I understand in some spiriitual reading or discussion, that the idol of any good is smaller or roughtly the size of a human. My belief is this is to teaches humility, respect. (will look for reference on this)

Moreover, it always allows for easy maintenance and proper upkeep and as well to allow this iconography to be treated with respect.

Guys please refrain from disrespecting the hindu religion or disrespecting their God. We can criticize the money spent on this statue but we should not hurl abuses.
