Qualcomm makes major wireless charging breakthrough
Many of today’s top devices are made with metal bodies and frames, which is great for the consumer, but not always so good for manufacturers. Case in point: wireless charging doesn’t work with devices that feature metal exteriors, meaning companies can only push the technology so far forward with each new iteration. Phones like the HTC One M9 and iPhone 6 Plus don’t have wireless charging capabilities, for example, while the S6, which features a glass back, does.
Thanks to a new breakthrough from Qualcomm, however, that’s no longer the case.
Using Qualcomm WiPower technology in compliance the the Rezence standard, there’s now a way to wirelessly charge a device with metal exteriors.The technology is being made available today through WiPower licensees, which means the metal phones of tomorrow may support wireless charging; not necessarily a must-have feature, but something that’s certainly convenient. And it means you don’t have to add an obnoxious wireless charging case to your iPhone anymore.
“Building a wireless charging solution into devices with metal exteriors is a significant step for moving the entire industry forward,” said Steve Pazol, General Manager of Wireless Charging, Qualcomm. “[It] opens up the continued adoption of this desirable feature to a much wider range of consumer electronics and use cases.”
Although there’s a battle going on between wireless charging standards, Qualcomm’s breakthrough certainly makes a good case for supporting Rezence. As this technology evolves over the next few years, hopefully we’ll see it adopted more widely by manufacturers.
