Pakistan and Qatar on Monday have signed agreements to collaborate in multiple areas mainly import of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the Gulf state and cooperation between the two governments on security.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani witnessed the signing ceremony of two Agreements and four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) as the representatives of Pakistan and Qatar s respective ministries inked the documents, at the Amiri Diwan here.

Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain and Qatar s minister for energy Dr Muhammad bin Saleh Al Saada signed the MoU on import of LNG.

Pakistan is interested in importing 500 million cubic feet per day of LNG from Qatar that produces 77 million tonnes per annum of LNG. The imported LNG will be initially provided to the power houses in the country to generate 2,500 mega watt of electricity.

The Qatar s minister for energy is visiting Pakistan this month to hold talks with the respective ministers to evolve the mechanism of undertaking investment in various sectors which according to the Qatari Prime Minister could go upto five billion dollars.

The MoU on security cooperation between the Interior ministries of Pakistan and Qatar was signed by Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Qatar s minister of state for Interior. Both also inked an agreement on cooperation in legal field between the two governments.

The agreement in the field of Auqaf and Islamic Affairs was signed by Minister for Professional and Technical Training Riaz Pirzada.

The two countries signed an MoU between Pakistan s Ministry of Water and Power and Qatar s Ministry of Energy for cooperation in hydropower development.

Chairman Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Shakil Durrani and Qatar s energy minister Muhammad Al Saleh Al Saada signed the document.

A bilateral agreement was signed on Mutual Administrative Assistance for the Proper Application of Customs Law and Repression, Investigation and Enforcement of Customs Offenses between the governments of Pakistan and Qatar.

Pakistan s ambassador to Qatar Muhammad Sarfraz Ahmed Khanzada signed the document. Both also signed an MoUto cooperate in the field of organizing exhibitions between the two countries. --APP

Dunya News: Pakistan:-Qatar to give 500mcf gas per day to Pakistan...

Hope Qatar will go ahead with this large investment to propel the Pakistani economy. Qatar is playing very active, bold and positive role in current Arab Spring uprising and helping the Arab masses to acheive their freedom.

This is offtopic but a relevant question. Being Iran on its neighour, why pakistan requires to buy oil from countries which is comparatively away from its place? I feel it would be cheaper for pakistan to buy most of its oil and gas from Iran than any other source.
Any idea about it?

Hope Qatar will go ahead with this large investment to propel the Pakistani economy.

Pakistan can make a $98 Billion dollar investment each year by getting rid of mismanagement, corruption, and tax dodgers. That sounds alot better than what any other nation can give Pakistan, what do you think?

As far as not getting oil from Iran, Saudi Arabia & Kuwait provide deferred payments.

Will Qatar give or sell gas to Pakistan?

sell obvioulsy

only queston is whats the price? will it be cheaper than Irans price of 14-20$ mbtu (Local gas costs 3-4$MBTU).
if its cheaper..than its possible iran gas proj could be postponned.

i think real reason for our problems is lack of using coal for power..ggas shouldnt be used for electrcity
our production is around 4.6 billion cubic feet and demand around 5.5 at peak times. if we change all of our plants to caol our demand will drop to less than 4 as electricity consumes 30% of gas.
CNG sector only consumes 10%

byway its better as our idiot policy makers are using oil to produce elctricity!

ok i have a question. we sign an accord with the iranians for gas and then we go ahead sign an agreement with the qataris for gas!

so far nothing is delievered everything is just signed and how much gas do we need when we clearly produce ample amounts in deira bugtti?

well if you put our energy situation is purely due to idiotic management.
our demand as of today in winter peak is about 5.6 billion cubic feet while our production is 4 billion cubic feet. In few years another 1 billion cubic feet gas will enter from DORMANT fields which were previously not used(amazing!!!).

now our real problem is that unlike other countries we are using oil and gas for electricity purposes, e.g US,india and china produce half of their energy from coal we instead do it from gas ...(why? coz we were blessed with enormous gas and hydral power back in 60/70s so we forgot about coal.) so 30% of our gas goes for electrcity instead of using coal. This has caused a acute shortage which either translates into electrcity shortage or coal shortage..
so we have one short term solution and two long term solution

in short term we need gas we cant change this, we have to change from oil to gas( i dont see any country in world using oil for electricity except Aarbs and pakistan!!)

in long term
1.we need to quickly convert into coal by doing this we would become self seficient, infact have enough to export fertilizer if we do so
2.switch to hydro project.e.g iran gas pipeline will provide 1.2 billion cubic feet gas which will produce 4000MW of energy with yearly cost of nearly 2 billion dollars but a bunji project can produce 7000MW at initial cost of 5 billion dollars, its cheaper than bhasha which costs 12 billion dollars as its a run over river project not a dam

iran gas pipeline will produce 1.2 billion cubic feet gas at 2015 at a finacing cost of 3 billion dollars !!
while qatar will provide 0.5 billion cubic feet gas.

i think qatar gas will stop gas shortage as we are deficient for about 0.5 billion cubic feet in summer while next year our domestic supply would have increased by 1 billion cubic feet gas ; atleast thats what they hope from uch 2 fields and qadri gas fields

lets hope they focus on coal and hydral instead of wasting money on iran gas pipeline...

If local gas cost $4 than why to pay $14 to Iranians or Qatris?

While Saudi Arabia has given us free petrol on various occasions.

becasue we no longer have any more local gas..and foreign companies wouldnt invest with so low return...
yet if we imporve our eelctrcity problem, i.e use coal/hydro instead of gas..we will become self suffcient for atleast next 10 years.

Traditional means are the best.
From China to the EU everybody is building COAL FIRED power plants.
Renewable sources like wind, hydro are unreliable.
