SUKKUR: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that the private sector of the UK has made an offer of considerable investment for producing diesel by exploiting the coal reserves of Sindh. He said that by implementing the agreement we could save foreign exchange being utilised on import of diesel and also boost our industrial production.
Addressing a press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club after the PPP Hyderabad division workers meeting on Sunday, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that Sindh was rich in natural resources and the PPP government would try its best to utilise these resources for the betterment of the people. He said that during this tenure, the PPP government had already launched three coal based projects for generating electricity to overcome the energy crisis. Now a British company has expressed its interest to produce diesel from coal reserves.
The Sindh chief minister said that the PPP would hold a big public gathering on December 27 at Garhi Khuda Bux on the eve of the fifth death Anniversary of Benazir Bhutto to pay rich tributes on her services and sacrifices that she rendered for the cause of democracy and to protect the rights of farmers, labourers, journalists and legal fraternity. He said that this gathering would be more important because the PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would address a public meeting in Sindhi and Urdu and he will also chalk out the future strategy of the party.
Responding to a question about the law and order situation in Karachi, the Sindh chief minister said that there were multidimensional reasons for target killings. He said that the major reason was land grabbing and this reason surfaced when the Revenue Department was made to work under the control of local government system introduced in 2001 by the last regime. He said that the system had jeopardised the whole revenue system under which influential/criminal elements occupied thousands acres of land illegally in Karachi. Furthermore, the land record got burnt to remove evidences. He said that in addition, upto two million foreigners had settled illegally in Karachi with the facilitation of the previous regime.
He said that people may not forget the major incident of law and order in Sindh that took place during the government of last regime.
We inherited poor law and order situation but we did our best to control it and today the situation is much more better as compared to the past, when even the head of state, provincial personalities, religious leaders were attacked and religious and ethnic riots had broken out.
He said that when they came into power there were 85 kidnapping cases in Sindh but now only three such cases had been reported so far. He said that now more 15,000 police personnel had been inducted in the Sindh Police force whereas training and sophisticated weapons were also being provided to them to control the situation. He said that many terrorists had been apprehended.
Responding to another question, Qaim said that we are democratic people and believe in reconciliation. Responding to a question about delimitation before general election, the Sindh chief minister said that this matter pertained to ECP which was in better position to take action. However, he made it clear that the PPP wants to hold general elections on schedule. The CM, while lauding the services of journalists for restoration of democracy, announced Rs 1.2 million as a special grant for Hyderabad Press Club.
