Punjab government, Google sign accord on promoting tourism

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Punjab government and Google for co-operation in information technology sector at Arfa Software Technology Park, here on Monday.

Under the agreement, Google will provide access to the historical and tourist attractions of the province on internet to promote world-wide awareness about the rich heritage of the province.

Secretary Tourism Dr Allah Bakhsh Malik and William Fitzgerald of Google Asia signed the document.

Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Provincial Finance Minister Kamran Michael, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretary Irrigation, Chairman Information Technology Board and representatives of Google were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, the Punjab Chief Minister welcomed the agreement with Google for co-operation in information technology and said that access to the historical and tourist sites of Punjab through Google mailing and internet would promote awareness about the modern and ancient Lahore as well as its historical and cultural heritage.

He thanked Google and said that Punjab government was implementing a comprehensive programme on information technology and measures were also being taken for the speedy execution of land record computerisation project.

He said Google should also extend assistance in the expeditious completion of this project.

There were a number of projects of Punjab government about which Google could provide information to the people of the world including the state-of-the-art Daanish schools equipped with modern facilities for the poorest of the poor boy and girl students of the province and setting up of IT labs in more than 4,000 schools of Punjab, he added.

Shahbaz said that 110,000 laptops were also being distributed on merit among talented boy and girl students free of cost and WiFi system was being installed in campuses for those laptops and Google could also extend co-operation in this project.

He directed Chairman Planning & Development and Project Director Land Record Computerisation to give a briefing to the Google team regarding steps taken by Punjab government during last four years so that their assistance in those projects could also be solicited.

William Fitzgerald of Google Asia said that interaction between Punjab government and Google in information technology was a good beginning.

He said Google had also been engaged in the relief activities for flood affectees and the agreement of co-operation reached today was a welcome step.

He said that access to historical and tourist sites of Punjab on the website would promote awareness in the world about the cultural traditions and civilisation of Punjab.

He said the agreement was the beginning of mutual interaction between Punjab government and Google and co-operation would further be enhanced in this regard.
