Prison break: Jail officials puzzled over Indian prisoner’s escape

KARACHI:
An Indian prisoner, who escaped from District Jail Malir, could not be traced by prison authorities, here on Tuesday.

Kishwar Bhagwandas, an Indian fisherman, was among 54 Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Maritime Security Agency for illegally straying into Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone on January 29. Bhagwandas was detained with another 350 Indian fishermen.

He was last seen by prison officials working in the jail and was found missing when prisoners were brought back to their cells. Sindh Minister for Prisons, Manzoor Wassan, taking strict notice of the prison break has suspended jail superintendent Nazeer Shah and sought a report from the Inspector General of Prisons within 24 hours. Shah told The Express Tribune that Bhagwandas was new and did not know about the jail very well, which makes his escape even more puzzling.
