Bolsonaro's Decree Allows Brazilians to Buy Military Rifles
Brasilia, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The decree signed recently by President Jair Bolsonaro to regulate the possession of weapons in Brazil allows citizens to buy military rifles, local media warned on Tuesday.
According to the definition established in 2000 by the Brazilian Army, the use of all military equipment that shoots a projectile above 407 joules (ballistic energy) was restricted.
However, the new regulation expands the limit above 1,620 joules.
Before Bolsonaro signed the decree, Brazilians could only buy weapons with a kinetic energy up to 407 joules. That included .32 and .38 revolvers and guns of 380 joules.
The new measure allows Brazilians to purchase .40 pistols (only authorized for the police), 9-mm guns (used by the federal police) and .45 guns (used by the Army).
The decree also authorizes people to buy weapons made by the company Taurus.
