Winds favour PPP in Punjab by-polls: NA-155: Lodhran II
LAHORE: Former MNA Nawab Hayat Tareen of the PPP has an edge over his opponent Akhtar Kanjo in the by-elections of NA-155 Lodhran II, as major political forces of the area are out for his support, yet a tough competition will be witnessed here.
The seat got vacant after the resignation of Nawab Hayat Tareen in the wake of the fake degrees issue, who was declared successful as a PPP nominee in the same constituency in the 2008 general elections. An interesting fact is that his opponent at that time was same as is now Akhtar Khan Kanjo. As many as 16 candidates filed nomination papers for the elections and all were declared valid.
The polling will take place tomorrow (Thursday). This constituency is spread over a complete tehsil area of Kehror Pacca and various areas of tehsil Dunyapur. The areas of Dunyapur tehsil include Dunyapur Town Committee, qanungo halqas of Dunyapur and Chak 12-L. As many as nine Patwar Circles of tehsil Dunyapur, including Patwar Circle Chak no 8m, 9m, 14m, 17m, 23m, 26m, 28m, 38m and 235WB, are parts of the constituency.
The total number of voters in the constituency is 272,048. Out of this, 156,075 are male, while 115,973 are female voters. The Election Commission of Pakistan has set up 61 polling stations for men and 61 for women, while 190 are combined, hence the total number of polling stations in the constituency is 312. The number of polling booths in the area is 681. Out of these, 370 are for men, while 311 are exclusively for female voters. The presiding officers deputed in the area are 312, while 681 assistant presiding officers and polling officers each are included in the staff.
The two opponents of the 2008 general elections Nawab Hayat Tareen and Akhtar Kanjo are facing each other again. Nawab Hayat won the last elections and was also declared a returning candidate for the National Assembly in the Nawaz Sharif era. Akhtar Kanjo won the 2002 elections on a PML-Q ticket, but resigned during the last days of General Musharrafs regime and contested by-elections during the same regime on a PML-N ticket and won the seat.
A survey of the area tells us that tough competition is expected here despite the PML-Qs all-out support for the PPP candidate. Its interesting to note that the base of politics in this area is the Siddique Khan Kanjo group and the anti-Kanjo group.
The ground realities of the constituency are that Nawab Hayat Tareen has support from Siddique Khan Baloch, a sitting MNA from the second National Assembly constituency of the same district. He won the 2008 general elections on a PML-Q ticket, but is now supporting the PPP candidate. The two sitting MPAs attached to this NA constituency belong to the PPP. They are Akram Kanjo and Shafique Araien.
The influentials of the constituency Tahir Khan Malazaie, Mirza Nasir Baig, former MNA Nawab Amanullah Khan, Mumtaz Khan Noon, and former tehsil nazim Sajjad Joyia are also supporting the PPP candidate. These men are icons for their families and have deep roots in the area.
Akhtar Kanjo enjoys the support of his rival in the 2008 general elections, Ajmal Khan Kanjo. Hayatullah Tareen was declared the returning candidate after securing 56,490 votes, while the two Kanjos secured more than 81,000 votes in total, as Akhtar got 41,642 and Ajmal bagged 40,109 votes. This time, the two are unitedly contesting against Nawab Hayat Tareen.
Former zila nazim Abdur Rehman Kanjo, who stood against Akhtar Kanjo in the general elections, is supporting him in these by-elections. Abdur Rehman is the son of renowned politician of the area Siddique Khan Kanjo and has served as the zila nazim for eight years. The young, soft-spoken Kanjo has earned a good repute in the political circles.
Former MPA Malik Aslam Awan is also supporting Akhtar Kanjo in this election. The interesting fact is that a stepbrother of Abdur Rehman, Amin Kanjo, is opposing Akhtar and supporting the PPP candidate, Nawab Hayat Tareen.
The circumstances in the constituency predict a tough competition tomorrow, but the support from many political notables of the district for the PPP candidate makes him a little favourite. raja riaz

Winds favour PPP in Punjab by-polls: NA-68: Sargodha
LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Mazhar Ahmad Qureshi and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nominee Shafqat Hayat Baloch are coming face to face in Sargodha, contesting elections on another seat of the National Assembly vacated over the issue of a fake education degree.
The National Assemblys NA-68 seat was declared vacant due to the resignation of Syed Javed Hussian Shah, a PML-N MNA elected in the February 2008 general elections. He had to resign due to his fake degree and the Election Commission of Pakistan announced by-elections on the seat, which will be held tomorrow (Thursday).
Syed Javed Hussain Shah had won the 2008 general elections by securing 80,174 votes. His opponent, Mazhar Ahmad Qureshi, bagged 56,959 votes, while Farakh Javed Ghuman got 38,516 votes.
As many as 19 candidates filed nomination papers for these by-elections. Out of these nomination papers, 10 candidates were rejected, while nine were declared valid.
The polling will take place tomorrow (Thursday). This constituency is spread over the areas of three tehsils of district Sargodha. A complete tehsil of Sahiwal, the total population of tehsil Shahpur, excluding Jhawarian Town and Jhawarian qanungo halqas, and Sillanwali tehsil, excluding Sillanwali II qanungo halqa and the Patwar Circles of Chak no 119NB, 122NB, 130NB, 132NB and 135NB of the Sargodha district.
The total number of voters in the constituency is 383,743. Out of these, 205,560 are male, while 178,183 are female voters. The Election Commission of Pakistan has set up 62 polling stations for men and 62 for women, while 184 are combined polling stations, hence the total number of polling stations in the constituency is 308. The number of polling booths in the area is 870. Out of these, 486 are for men, while 384 are exclusively for female voters. The presiding officers deputed in the area are 308, while 870 assistant presiding officers and polling officers each are included in the staff.
Mazhar Ahmad Qureshi was an MNA in 2002 from the PML-Q, but shifted his loyalties before the 2008 general elections. He belongs to a political family of the area and several members of his family are civil bureaucrats. They are considered influential in the area. He is contesting the elections on a PPP ticket. This time he has support from noted political figures of the area, as Chaudhary Anwar Ali Cheema a known influential person and MNA elected several times is supporting him. Besides, he also enjoys the support of Farakh Javed Ghuman, a PML-Q leader in the past. Farakh tried to get a PML-N nomination, but after failing, decided to support the PPP candidate.
The PML-N has fielded Shafqat Hayat Baloch as its candidate, who enjoys the support of locals of the area. His strength is the party vote, as the PML-N enjoys massive public support in the area. The defeat of the PML-N candidate in by-elections for the Punjab Assembly in the recent past proved a huge setback for the party here. The situation was so perturbing for party chief Nawaz Sharif that he summoned a meeting at his Raiwind residence and expressed utmost displeasure over the performance of his party leaders. He linked the party offices to the results of the by-elections of Sargodha and Gujranwala.
The PML-N Punjab cabinet members have been stationed there, working to ensure a victory for their candidate.
The political pundits predict a victory for the PPP in this constituency as well after tomorrows polling and see its candidate in a better position there. raja riaz

Winds favour PPP in Punjab by-polls: NA-100: Gujranwala VIII
LAHORE: The environment is not very conducive for PML-N candidate Azhar Qayyum Nahra in NA-100 Gujranwala-VIII, as his opponent, PPPs Rana Tassaduq Masood, has won the support of PML-Q leaders of the area.
The PML-N leaders are of the view that their candidate will win with a huge majority as the competition is 65 percent in favour of their party and 35 percent in the PPPs. Political pundits, however, disagree with these claims and are of the view that the picture is not as rosy as being painted by their PML-N ministers. They see a tough competition, but the situation is in favour of the PPP candidate.
The seat got vacant after the disqualification of PML-N MNA MudassarNahra over his fake degree. His appeal was even rejected by the Supreme Court that upheld the decision of its lower court.
MudassarNahra was an MPA in 2002 from the PML-Q, but the party did not award him a ticket and he contested the National Assembly elections as an independent candidate. He won the elections defeating PPP candidate Tariq Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad and a PML-N candidate. Mudassargot 57,329 votes, while Yaqoob got 32,511 votes and bagged the third position. The runner-up was PML-Qs Bilal Ejaz who had got 53,285 votes. The PML-N candidate could only secure 6,300 votes. Ejaz had won the 2002 elections on a PML-Q ticket.
Mudassarjoined the PML-N after winning the elections, but was later disqualified by the court. The court also ordered fresh elections and 29 candidates filed their nomination papers. Out of these, the nomination papers of five candidates were rejected and 24 were declared valid.
Polling for this seat will take place tomorrow (Thursday). This constituency is spread over the complete tehsil of Nowshera Virkan, areas of Qila Didar Singh and Gujranwala Sadar tehsil. The qanungo halqas of Gujranwala Sadar tehsil Chak Kohna and Chak Jaid are parts of this constituency, while Fatehpur, Gajjar Gola, Naiwala and Bucha Chatha Patwar Circles of Akil Gar qanungo halqa are included in the constituency. The qanungo halqa of Hardo Verpal, excluding the Patwar Circles of Bhuman Bath, Kalaske, Hadro Verpal, Dhalla Chatha and Ghiawala, are parts of the constituency.
The total number of voters in the constituency is 329,278. Out of these, 177,951 are males, while 151,327 are females. The Election Commission has set up 13 polling stations for men and 13 for women, while 200 are combined, hence the total number of polling stations in the constituency is 226. The number of polling booths in the area is 638. Out of these, 376 are for men and 262 exclusively for female voters. Presiding officers deputed in the area are 226, while 638 assistant presiding officers and polling officers each are included in the staff.
The two opponent families of the 2008 general elections are facing each other his time as well, however, their members are different, as MudassarNahra has been replaced by his brother, Azhar, and Tariq Yaqoob by Tassaduq Masood.
A survey of the area tells that tough competition is expected here despite the PML-Qs all-out support to the PPP candidate. The PPP candidate is however in a comfortable position with the support of the Rajputs of the area. His opponent in the 2008 general elections Bilal Ejaz, son of former MNA Rana Ejaz, is fully supporting him. Another Rajput icon of the area, Rana Shamshad, son of Chaudhary Wakeel, is also supporting the PPP candidate.
Record of the 2008 elections in this constituency reveals that Muddasar, the disqualified MNA, had got 57,329 votes and the PML-N candidate secured 633 votes. Vote count of the PML-Q and PPP candidates was above 85,000. Now, the two have joined hands against the PML-N candidate. The added advantage for the PPP candidate is support from Chaudhary Wakeels family.
PML-N Punjab cabinet members have been stationed there for the last two weeks, working to secure a victory for their candidate, as Nawaz Sharif has expressed concern over their performance in Sargodhas by-elections where the PML-N candidate lost.
The situation is not different with the PPP, as Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani himself addressed a public meeting in Nowshera Virkan. The political pundits predict a victory for the PPP in this constituency tomorrow. raja riaz
