Power demand-supply gap comes to nil'

RECORDER REPORT
LAHORE (May 30 2010): A drop in mercury has equalised the demand and supply of electricity in the country, as the shortfall reached to nil level on Saturday with matching power generation of 12968 MW to demand of 12968 MW. It may be noted that the mercury had dropped considerably since Friday, resulting in a substantial fall in the pressure on power supply.

Pepco sources said the demand for power had equalised the generation levels. It is worth mentioning here that the difference between power demand and supply had widened to the abnormal level of 3500 MW in early part of the week when the temperature hit 50 C in the country. The death toll of those heavily exposed to the warm weather was rising with every passing day. It also gave rise to the demand and supply gap on Pepco system.

There was a strong chance that the demand and supply gap would immediately touch the level of 5000 MW with switching on the air-conditioners in the country. But a drop in the mercury provided a sigh of relief to Pepco officials though the power generation through hydel sources was still 4812 MW against a generation capacity of over 6000 MW. The thermal generation, on the other hand, was recorded as 2463 MW besides 5557 MW from IPPs and 136 MW though rental power plants.

The government had taken some drastic steps to overcome the power crisis including closing of shopping markets by 8 pm and announcing two official weeks a month. Further, the government had directed to keep air-conditioners off until 11 in the morning to facilitate the domestic and commercial consumers. These steps bore fruitful results and load shedding duration for domestic consumers had reduced impressively. Not only this, the supply of power to the industrial sector was also being ensured on priority basis to keep the industry wheel running.
