Poland produces pilotless patrolling chopper
The first Polish pilotless helicopter constructed by a aviation scientist from Krakow is on its way to conquer the worlds air space, its manufacturers hope.
The robot is designed to monitor an area of 10 km even under difficult weather conditions. It is equipped with cameras and sensors, weighs 6 kg and is able to transmit images from the height of 1,000 m.
The robot can be used by police, army, rescue teams and security guards. It shows, for example, where a fire is or which roofs are laden with snow. An operator can follow the root of the robot thanks to a special pair of goggles and steer the machine through his head movements.
The robot constructed by Grzegorz Chmaj from the University of Science and Technology in Krakow, is unique.
The helicopters main advantage is that it can take off and land without anybodys help, which is new and no other robots can do it, says Prof. Tadeusz Uhl, the constructors promoter. Besides, a simple PC and a week-long training are enough to operate the robot. And its much cheaper than a real patrolling helicopter, adds the professor.
It took Grzegorz Chmaj, who had vocational training in Canada and France, almost four years to construct the helicopter. The most difficult part was to formulate the right algorithm for steering, confesses Chmaj.
Robots similar to the Polish invention have also been constructed in the US, Japan and Israel but they are more expensive and less user-friendly. Therefore, Polish and foreign companies have already taken an interest in the machine. (mg)
