Poland Likely to Award Sub Deal to Saab

WARSAW, Poland — In the aftermath of the spat between Poland and France over Warsaw’s decision to cancel the Caracal helicopter deal with Airbus Helicopters, the Polish Defence Ministry is most likely to purchase three A26-class submarines from Sweden’s Saab.

France’s DCNS, which pitched its Scorpene-class sub, is no longer considered as the forerunner in Poland’s sub procurement, Defence Ministry sources told pro-government daily Nasz Dziennik. Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, which offers its HDW-class sub, is also regarded as having low chances of securing the contract. The deal is estimated to be worth up to 10 billion zloty (US $2.6 billion).

Earlier this month, Poland’s Ministry of Economic Development decided to end its negotiations with Airbus Helicopters, whose Caracal was chosen by the previous government under its transport helo procurement. Since then, relations between Poland and France have remained stringent.

Following Warsaw’s decision, French President Francois Hollande decided to cancel his official visit to Poland, which was scheduled for Oct. 13, and Paris withdrew an invitation to a delegation of Polish officials for the forthcoming Euronaval trade show.

In response, Polish Defence Minister Bartosz Kownacki said in a televised interview that while there was no diplomatic war between the two countries, the French “learned to eat with a fork from us several centuries ago, so perhaps this is their way of behaving”.

Under its Orka (or Orca) program, the Polish Defence Ministry is aiming to replace the Navy’s outdated Kobben-class subs, which are to be decommissioned by 2021.

This is very constructive indeed....

what an idiot

Good for saab/sweden: tkms tried to eliminate the kockums company, tkms will be sorry now.

Is A-26 more capable then other subs in competition apart from political issue?

Kockums is/was a great of very few remaining sub designers. Since poland is situated on the baltic, like sweden and germany, they shall have somewhat similar requirements. Since sweden isnt nato, it will have fewer out or area task then germany, which also has north sea and atlantic to deal with.. Which may mean the swedish design is closer to polish requirements.

Kockums, now SAAB has been a leader of AIP submarines for a long time,
and their submarines have very low inherent noise.

There is a reason tkms tried to choke kockums and/or take its crown jewels :)
All the Crown Jewels were owned by the state, not by TKMS/Kockums.
When TKMS refused to play ball, the government raided their facilities in Sweden,
and grabbed all the stuff and handed it over to SAAB.
Then SAAB started to hire key persons.
In the end TKMS threw in the towel and sold the remains to SAAB.

Probably a plot for a movie in this affair.

They dont own french , japanese, chinese and russian submarine builders, not to mention spain, italy, turkey, south korea..... What monopoly?
but when u see the matter of quality.we all see at europe.sowe have very little options

But will the A26 have the possibility of launching cruise missiles ? Tomawaks (if the US gives the go ahead) more precisely, the Scalp flew out the window after how they've treated the French.

Bs. Kilo subs are touted here as marvelous black holes that give nato headaches and likewise yuans. Meanwhile japan operates some top of the line subs but is new at exports. This quality argument is bs.
