ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Tuesday announced that the government would continue Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
Quoting a recorded statement of PML-N lawmaker Ashan Iqbal, a spokesman of BISP said, "PML-N was also in favour of this initiative," adding that the upcoming government intends to change name of the program as Pakistan Income Support Programme.
He also said that when BISP was planned, the PML-N was a coalition partner of the Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarian and the initiative was taken with the objective to provide financial assistance as well as social protection and safety net to economically distressed individuals and families.
He said that conducting a poverty survey was one of the major achievements of the programme. Based on the survey, BISP was providing targeted subsidies to all its beneficiaries, he added.
BISP, the spokesman said, had also introduced a graduation programme, which was based on a number of initiatives. Waseela-e-Haq programme offers interest free loans to the beneficiary families, up to Rs 300,000.
"The purpose of this loan is to help the beneficiaries to establish their own business and start earning their own livelihood.
