ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf raised the issue of drone attacks with US Ambassador to Pakistan Mr Richard G Olson on Thursday, the day a drone strike in Mir Ali killed three suspected militants.

The drones are counterproductive and “we need to find alternative means to eliminate terrorists”, the prime minister told the ambassador, who called on him at the PM House. Oslon said he will convey this concern of Pakistan to US authorities.“We are fighting against those who attack our mosques, schools, cantonments and innocent civilians and children... We know we have to do a lot but we will (surely) wipe them out,” a handout issued by PM’s Office quoted the prime minister as saying. But the conventional yet significant expression that drones operation is a ‘violation of the sovereignty’ of the front-line war on terror ally was conspicuously missing from the official statement.PM Raja said things have improved considerably since 2008 when media was rife with rumours that terrorists were near Islamabad. With the support of the people and international community the law enforcement agencies have succeeded in pushing them back, he added.Ambassador Oslon said that the United States acknowledges the sacrifices and contribution rendered by the people of Pakistan. The international community does not appreciate Pakistan’s contributions “as much as it should”, said the ambassador, who was making his maiden courtesy call on the prime minister.Congratulating the US ambassador on his appointment to Pakistan, the PM expressed the hope that bilateral relations would be strengthened during his tenure as his experience of the region will be helpful in creating a better mutual understanding. Raja said that recent interaction between two countries at different levels have been very encouraging.Olson said that US wants to have a long term relationship with Pakistan base on “mutual respect and common interest”. The ambassador said that the United States is encouraged by the recent visits of Afghan High Peace Council Chairman Salahuddin Rabbani and Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassuol to Islamabad and the visit of General Kayani to Kabul.
