KARACHI: Moving Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIAC) out of the Defence Ministry and appointment of aviation adviser to the prime minister (PM) is a move in the right direction, said a Joint Action Committee of PIA Employees (JACPIAE) spokesman while congratulating Nawaz Sharif on assuming the office of PM for the third time and hoped that under his visionary leadership PIAC will regain its lost stature.
Establishment of an Aviation Ministry, to look after civil aviation and other related industries would help revive the industry in Pakistan, we are mindful of the fact that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) morally supported the struggle of PIAC employees against PIA-Turkey deal and saved the national airline from privatization, which would have been a great disaster.
The statement said that like in many other countries there should be an Aviation Ministry to look after the affairs of Civil Aviation and other aviation-related industries should be put under the Aviation Ministry. Nominating an aviation adviser to the PM is a good step but there should be an Advisory Committee on Aviation under the designated aviation adviser. This committee should comprise representatives from JACPIAE, other associations from indigenous airlines and independent aviation experts and former answerable to the PM. This step will end the political interference in PIAC matters, which is necessary and need of the time.
He said that the committee and PIA employees at large are confident that PMs efforts now will be towards rebuilding PIAC as a national asset rather than the constant fear of privatisation, and demanded meaningful measures to end corruption in PIAC by taking retrospective action against those who caused grave financial losses to the national airline.
The spokesman said that there is no doubt that PIAC has the potential to regain its lost glory, become financially viable and even support economic growth of Pakistan.
We have made a comprehensive plan to make PIAC a profitable entity and we seek an audience for presentation to the PM on our suggestions, we extend our full support in all decisions taken by the government for revival of the airline, the spokesman said.
