The Pentagon estimates its Columbia-class submarine programme, to replace ageing Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), will cost USD127.036 billion.
In its latest Selected Acquisition Reports the Department of Defense said Colombia-class programme costs decreased by USD1.202 billion from their original baseline.
The report said this was “due primarily to a revised cost estimate and funds realignment” for an ‘integrated enterprise plan’ that seeks construction efficiencies with Virginia-class attack submarines, which will be in production at the same time. Those efficiencies, the Pentagon said, would save USD1.240 billion. The programme would, however, add USD37.7 million for “a Naval Foundry and Propeller Center power upgrades requirement”.
