Peace committees agree to negotiate under constitution

ISLAMABAD: The committees formed by the government and the Taliban to hold dialogue have agreed to negotiate within the framework of the constitution.

According to the joint statement issued following the first meeting of the committees, both the sides float various recommendations during the meeting.

The statement stated that both sides also agreed to limit the scope of dialogue to troubled areas.

It said that the Taliban’s committee members expressed desire to meet the Prime Minister, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief.

The Taliban committee would soon visit Waziristan to convey the demands of the government’s committee to the Taliban leadership, the statement said.

The committees also agreed to hold next meeting soon.

The Taliban and government talks committees issued joint press release on Thursday saying that the act against security and peace must be ended immediately while Taliban demanded to remove the word ‘banned’ before TTP’s name.

Taliban negotiator Maulana Samiul Haq said dialogue would be held under the 1973 constitution adding it was also necessary to come an end of attacks from both sides.

Taliban committee has also demanded to meeting with Prime Minister, Army Chief and ISI Chief adding it was also vivid the powers of government talks committee.

pior to the meeting, members of the government committee- -Irfan Siddiqui, Major (retd) Aamir, Rahimullah Yousafzai and Rustam Shah Mohmand met.

The coordinator of the committee, Irfan Siddiqui said in the first meeting bilateral issues and basic agenda would come under discussion.

The committee nominated by the Taliban comprises Maulana Samiul Haq, Professor Ibrahim and Maulana Abdul Aziz.

Earlier, Maulana Abdul Aziz said the Taliban wanted to have a meeting with their nominated committee. He said they were deliberating to visit Waziristan or call Taliban near Peshawar for meeting.

He further said they could ask Taliban to provide their demands in written, however, the final decision in this regard would be made after meeting with government committee.
