ISLAMABAD: The cricket stadium to be constructed in Islamabad with a capacity of over 50,000 spectators has been named after late prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The decision to this effect was taken in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Governing Board meeting held in Abbottabad late Tuesday.
It has been learnt that the PCB has already approved the initial tenders, which include bids for leveling of the surface, construction of the boundary wall and architecture.
It will be the largest cricket stadium in Pakistan. The PCB has already taken over a piece of land measuring 35 acres in Islamabad.
The board unanimously decided to name the stadium after Mohtarma Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. Now the venue will be called Benazir Bhutto Stadium.
Besides, Rs12.5 million was approved by the board for the upgradation and development work of Abbottabad cricket stadium.
It was decided that a boundary wall would be constructed around the stadium and green slopes would be built for spectators.
The board received a presentation on the planned Pakistan Premier League. The board was proposed a roadmap and updated on the progress made thus far.
The PCB plans to hold the league n March 2013.
To ensure best security protocols for the international teams, the board unanimously approved the purchase of bullet proof buses.
The members noted that the step would help PCB provide better security to the teams visiting Pakistan.
The board endorsed the decision to use Kookaburra balls in domestic tournaments, terming it a positive step for the improvement of domestic cricket in Pakistan.
