proper and careful management is required at the national level. unfortunately, we, the Pakistanis, are a lazy people. These will have to be micromanaged day in day out, tirelessly for at least a decade if we want to achieve that target. there will be tonnes of hindrances, like corruption, incompetence, global issues that effect us (FATF and relations with US are an example), but work must go on. our past govts have mostly focused on completing their terms and securing their power, without a moment of thought given to proper management of economy. I really hope IK does even a small bit to get the ball rolling.
Yesterday's thing at COMSTECH showed that we can do more, many people are laughing at that too, but it is something. The thing that is needed now is to sustain that momentum and commercialize the tech developed by civil and strategic orgs and to work with the private sector.
What is needed is education at the lower level, and govt incentivizing (and even forcing) the private sector to invest in latest technologies. I have worked at private orgs, and am now working at a govt org, what is surprising is that the govt is more willing to adopt new tech, but doesnt have the money. The private orgs are still stuck in the past, they are still running crappy, decades old machinery. the local saiths do not seem to understand that buying new machinery will cost a lot right now, but will save and earn more in the future. other than the telecom and IT industry, no one gives a sh*t about what is happening in the world.
Recently visited a seminar where a person representing sialkot's industry was invited, the guy laid the entire blame on academia, that they do not inform us about the leading tech, and yet at the same time he claimed that he doesnt hire engineers. how tf are you supposed to know where the world is heading when you do not hire engineers? when you dont listen to engineers, but listen to a diploma pass technician, who tells to keep things as they are (suffered this myself, the diploma pass guy was an ooooold friend and colleague, so the owner refused to listen to us).
New machinery will not only save labour cost, but is more energy efficient, as well as producing waayyy more than a human being in the same amount of time without tiring. (i think i went off on a tangent, but i think people may get my point: we are too lethargic and set in our ways, too much inertia)
the last part in previous post applies to existing industries and factories. The same applies to investing in new areas entirely, namely: electronics. it doesnt take a huge area of land to set up an electronics manufacturing unit, unfortunately, apart from a few small time companies, no one has thought about it. the saiths are literally sitting on mounds of wealth, but refuse to invest that money, they, instead, like to hoard it. apart from electroncis manufacturing unit, you can set up fab less design companies, India earns billions through this. you dont have to set up a fabrication plant, all you have to do is to get your hands on ic design toolchains.
yes, qualified manpower is required, but one can always follow what lampro mellon is doing, they hired a bunch of fresh grads and trained them on this stuff, and then offered them proper employment in this field. govt will have to play its part as well, if private orgs are hesitant to train people, then govt should take it upon itself to set up asic design and verification training centers. nothing is impossible, it is not even difficult, but, like I said, we are a lazy and lethargic people set in our ways.
