Lahore, Sept 4 (ANI): An opinion poll conducted in Pakistan has found that around two-thirds of people there want the exiled leaders, including the two ex-premiers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, back in the country and participate in the next year's general elections.

While 18 percent of the respondents favoured Benazir Bhutto as the potential candidate for prime minister, she was followed by Shaukat Aziz (15 per cent) and Nawaz Sharif (13 per cent).

Around 50 per cent of the Pakistanis were of the opinion that President Pervez Musharraf should keep only one office.

The survey was conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), a research organisation of the US Republican Party, in collaboration with the Socio-Economic Development Consultants in the months of May and June this year.

IRI officials said that the results had been compiled in accordance with the international standards for market and social research methodologies. A total of 3046 adult Pakistanis, both men and women, from nearly 200 villages and 150 urban locations from all four provinces were randomly selected and interviewed.

The findings of the Pakistani Voters' Perceptions of the Political Landscape are being circulated among politicians and high-ranking officials reportedly with the help of the US embassy, reported the Dawn.

According to the survey findings, around 77 per cent of the people though that the country needed a very strong and popular leader. Also, nearly two-thirds of the respondents approved of the way Musharraf was handling his job.

Sixty per cent of the people wanted a parliamentary system instead of presidential system, while half of the respondents considered role of the Army in civilian government as necessary.

In the political party ratings, the ruling PML stood first (23 per cent) followed by the PPP (22 per cent), the PML-N (16 per cent), the MQM (12 per cent) and the MMA (seven per cent). (ANI)

Stupid Daily Times doesn't have even one election related story in today's edition ..
:(

I dont expect Mushy to be the president during 2007 election. Graduate clause may be withdrawn.

Rumours are that the election date will be announced earlier than schedule.

Eh .. isn't it going to be a Parliamentary elections? Where members will be voted into the assembly and they will in urn vote for the President..

Or will the president be directly voted by the people?

Hmm .. Is Pakistan according to the constitution still a Parliamentary democracy? Or since the advent of Mush has it become a US styled Presidential democracy?

Ohh Really? :)

No way they both are coming back at any cost, this poll is bull ****

They only want to come back to start from where they left, in urdu we used to see on PTV in old time

Nazreen waheen say silsila dobaara shoru kartay hain jahan say toota thaa
imho Benezir, Nawaz Shariz, and that MQM guy must be assasinated like Bugti along with the remaining so called 2 leaders in balochistan, one of them is Maingal
President Mushy is the best what we have, the way he addressed and answered the news reporters in Kabul yesterday was mind blowing :) tooooo goood, btw whoever the leader is we are gonna see the very same corrupt gang of power hungry and selfish politicians that we have right now, i dont know how they came back again and again? there must be not more then 20 families that are in power one way or other, with lots and lots of NAB casses against them.
And dear friends you must have noticed the NAs and PAs with ever growing army of misiters.

How to put an end to all this?

Regards

Which alliance is more powerful in real terms: MMA or the ARD ?
ARD is composed of mainly PPP and PML of whom are the main national parties. Quite simply PML is now the incumbent whilst PPP is the opp. The PML dominates the Frontier and Balochistan whilst the PPP dominates Sindh. The fight is therefore in the Punjab.

Yes it appaears they will be in feb/March 2007 rather than in Nov as scheduled. The reason is more practical than political there is a budget to be presented by 1st of July and you want the new gov rather than the outgoing gov to do so.

I think you wanted to say MMA rather tham PML

If I'm not mistaken (I don't know much of Pakistani politics) there are two PML's right? One is Nawaz's party PML-N the other is the Musharraf's PML-Q ..

Yes that is what the case is. PML-Q is the governing party while PML-N (Nawaz) is in the opposition.

Nope its PML, the main component of the MMA (the Jammaat and JUI) always have done better in he Frontier. As for the rest well PML is the largest Party in Balochistan and from what I have heard the reason for their defeat last time was simply since they did not even attempt to build as party there.

Actually Srirangan there are many branches of PML and there is hardly any alphabet left now.

There is a Nawaz League, PML-Q (Qurban League - the ruling party at the moment but is bound to disintegrate as soon as BB and NS return). Then there is Chatta league, Zia League (one man party of Ejaz ul Huq)
