Pakistani wins good citizenship award in Canada
PESHAWAR: A Canadian of Pakistani origin, originally from Peshawar, has won the Ontario state's good citizenship award. "Khalid Usman was among the 11 persons who were awarded Ontario's most prestigious medal for Good Citizenship for 2011," said a communique received here.
Khalid Usman has a brilliant record of social work and community services. He has done B.Com (Hons.) from Quaid-e-Azam College of Commerce, University of Peshawar, in 1970. He migrated to Canada and did his chartered accountantcy from Toronto in 1975 and then in 2009 was awarded Fellowship (FCA) by the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
In view of his social services, the Government of Pakistan also announced on August 14, 2011 to bestow upon him "Tamgha-e-Khidmat." Khalid Usman was the first Pakistani to be elected as councillor of the Markhan town, Ontario, for three consecutive terms. His advocacy work on behalf of the underprivileged and the needy was instrumental in raising funds in response to natural disasters such as the tsunami of 2004, Pakistan's earthquake in 2005, and the Philippines mudslide in 2006, said the press release.
He was instrumental in raising funds for almost all the local hospitals and many social organisations including Imran Khan's Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital and Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Pakistan.
